German term

jaulender Motor

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Vielen Dank !

Ramey Rieger (X) Oct 1, 2015:
Yes, kudoz is pretty darn challenging, don't you think?
Daniel Arnold (X) (asker) Oct 1, 2015:
I do indeed, Ramey. So far I am ruling out revving (different) and screaming (I have no information that the noise is really really loud), and I am not sure that the sound would necessarily have to be high-pitched.
Ramey Rieger (X) Oct 1, 2015:
Kudoz is pretty damn brilliant, don't you think?
Daniel Arnold (X) (asker) Oct 1, 2015:
So many options.... thank you all !
philgoddard Oct 1, 2015:
OK then :-)
Ramey Rieger (X) Oct 1, 2015:
Aw, Phil let us have our fun ;-).
philgoddard Oct 1, 2015:
I don't see the point of posting so many synonyms. It's a high-pitched noise, and it doesn't really matter what you call it. Howling sounds too loud to me, the kind of noise that Formula One cars would make on the starting grid, but all the other answers are acceptable in my opinion.
Daniel Arnold (X) (asker) Oct 1, 2015:
They didnt give me any info on the target audience, I will check that out. Thanks again.
Ramey Rieger (X) Oct 1, 2015:
AE or BE? for a US audience, howl would be more appropriate in this context. My years with a historic auto fixer-upper reminds me:
howl = protest during start-up/ warm-up
whine = over-exertion while driving
Daniel Arnold (X) (asker) Oct 1, 2015:
Thanks Ramey, wailing makes me think of Syrian mothers, prefer whines in that case.
Ramey Rieger (X) Oct 1, 2015:
Music to my ears wail isn't bad either. It's hard to tell without really hearing it, but since this not literary, we can select soberly. I still think howl is an option, as it combines whine and yelp, to my ears. Caterwaul is one of my favorite words...
philgoddard Oct 1, 2015:
Howl is heulen.
Ramey Rieger (X) Oct 1, 2015:
howl vs whine They are personified terms - whine is more plaintive, higher and thinner
howl is loud, symphonic and angry

howls/whines

Ah, the days of dragstrip racing...
their motors howled...
Note from asker:
Thank you Ramey.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : Not howling, which is quite different. I'll leave my answer as it has references.

Do that, references are not my specialty.
agree Richard Stephen : I like howling better - it's used very commonly in this context in the US.

Yes, it's also more familiar to me.

screaming engine

Screaming engine
It does it for awhile, 5 minutes or so, after I start it, then, sometimes, it quits for awhile, but starts back up again, even while I'm driving, within minutes.

My engine screams for about 5 minutes of running on a cold morning whilst idling

German term (edited): dass der Motor ... jaulte

that the engine makes a high-pitched noise

"The engine makes a high-pitched noise in the morning when it's cold outside. The sound is amplified when turning the wheels. It appears to be coming from the belt, but I'm not 100% sure."

I think the translation should avoid farmyard imitations.

Thank you Mr Lancashire.
Peer comment(s):

agree Andrea Garfield-Barkworth : I like that because it does differentiate from the 'ordinary' whine of an engine.

Hi Cilian,
my record speaks for itself. You’re the only one obsessively following me around with bizzare comments. If that’s supposed to enhance your credibility, you have even more to worry about than idiomatic English.
Note from asker:
Thank you Michael.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Cilian O'Tuama : Sounds like a pig/mouse. //Thanks, but don't worry about me. You should be more concerned about your frequent deluded attempts at idiomatic English

Comments seem to be getting more desperate. Amazing you’re not embarrassed to go on record with this nonsense.//See added note.
