: I wondered about this too, though I'm not quite sure what the text is really describing.../ Yes, and Google gets you lots of gardening results...people's final plans for borders and walkways!/Some cemeteries are really nice - lots of wildlife, etc.!

The term is "last landscape" but meanings abound. E.g. "Language is perhaps the last landscape left to destroy or the first we need to". Or, how about this book: Last Landscapes explores death and the landscape of the cemetery.

1) It's the last "landscape" opportunity, as opposed to a "seascape" (not convincing).
2) More poetically, a "ghostly/heavenly landscape", the place where all those lost at sea might make landfall, in a non-bodily, spiritual way, and through which they transit before moving up to the heavens ....

: Not entirely sure about your precise choice of words, but this would certainly be the way I'd interpret it; is it 'last' in the sense of 'end of the land, before you reach the sea', or in the sense of 'final resting place, where all the sailors wash up'?

Discussion
He is arriving at an island after having been in several other exotic/"savage" (meant as a compliment)locations. He finds this one a little less corrupted by western civilization, and has the impression, at first, that time has stopped here.
