Carotte de fond

French to English Tech/Engineering Petroleum Eng/Sci
In an "End of exploration drilling report"
" Des cutting ont été prélevés tout le long du puits (sauf dans les zones à perte de circulation). L'échnatillonnage a été intégré par 14 carottes de fond et 10 carottes latérales."

"Les carottes de fond suivantes ont été prélevées:" follows a list of depth intervals, with % of recovery, lithology and formation)

Discussion

Bourth (X) Jun 23, 2011:
Yes, Virgile carottage de fond recovers (relatively) intact samples, depending on the nature of the rock. The other technique you refer to is presumably sidewall coring (latéral) which disturbs the rock, resulting in a less-than-perfectly-intact sample.

Virgile (asker) Jun 23, 2011:
My problem is not with core sample (carotte), but with "de fond". I have found a discussion forum speaking of "carottage de fond", which was supposed to be different from another type of carottage (which distroyed the samples), but the forum was unfortunately in French, so no help there...

Thanks!
disagree B D Finch : In your reference, "bottom" refers to the ocean bottom or sea bed. As the lateral cores would also be from the ocean bottom, if this is offshore drilling, your answer is wrong.

the ref might be "referring to the ocean bottom" as you put it, but "carotte de fond" here means "bottom core (sample)"

i.e.

a core sample from the bottom of the ocean/ocean bed

this is how I understand it:)
Peer comment(s):

agree B D Finch : You were right in the first place. The carottes de fond are in apposition to carottes latérales, which must also come from the bottom of the ocean unless they are just water.

disagree Bourth (X) : Ref. to latéral suggests this is about the coring technique, not the location. // Er, ... yes ... that's called context and it helps put 2 and 37.659 together.

carottes de fond and carottes latérales are two separate things. The query is "carottes de fond".

Subsoil investigations

When investigating the subsoil and wishing to obtain core samples, you can either core the full depth (done for major infrastructure projects such as dams where information about every centimetre of depth is important) or you can rotary (destructive) drill to the depth you feel might be of interest, as in mineral prospection for instance, take a core sample from the bottom of that hole, then drill deeper if necessary and repeat the operation as many times as necessary, or you can drill a hole to the full depth envisaged, take a bottom core sample (from the bottom) and subsequently, if required, take sidewall core samples (carottage latéral à balles - CLAB) at other depths down the hole.

Unless drilling upwards or horizontally, a "conventional" or axial core sample is necessarily a bottom core sample at the time it is taken.

For info:
Sidewall coring (carottage latéral À BALLES):
A coring technique in which core samples are obtained from the hole wall in a zone that has already been drilled. a hollow BULLET is fired into the formation wall to capture the core and then retrieved on a flexible steel cable. core samples of this type usually range from 3/4 to 1-3/16 inches (20 to 30 millimeters) in diameter and from 3/4 to 4 inches (20 to 100 millimeters) in length. this method is especially useful in soft-rock areas.

Note from asker:
Thank you so much Bourth. You actually provided the answer I was after. The others, (even the right one!), sounded too much like guesswork.
