Other answerers to date have got the right idea. This answer is merely to point out that "good offices" exists as an expression in English with much the same meaning as its French counterpart. It basically means working as an intermediary behind the scenes without self-interest.
"The late" with article.
PS "Feu" is a bit odd in that it can be invariable or agree, depending on its position: "my late aunt" can be "feu ma tante" or "ma feue tante".

My use of "good offices" is entirely appropriate. Despite your pronouncements, there is no suggestion of a "mission de conciliation" in the original article. It is about someone (Ado) getting into power with the help of an influential person (Boga Doudou)

Avec \"good offices\" en anglais, il s\'agit plutôt de faire appel à un intermédiaire influent. Le sens n\'est pas tout à fait semblable, d\'où mon \"help\", général, en l\'absence de tout contexte.
En ce qui concerne l\'accord de \"feu\", c\'est plus compliqué. Ce mot, avant ou après l\'article ou pronom n\'a pas le même sens. Avant, il désigne l\'état d\'une personne récemment décédée et est toujours invariable. Après, il indique que la personne est la dernière à avoir disparu. Il s\'accorde en genre mais est invariable en nombre puisqu\'une seule personne peut être la dernière. Enfin, il est invariable devant un nom propre (contrairement à l\'usage par Proust).
De nos jours, on s\'arrange pour trouver une formulation au singulier (masculin, donc, puisque le féminin pluriel n\'existe pas).
