No, not French....I am saying that tenue de ville does not mean street clothes in English..no way...street clothes in English is opposed to a uniform of some kind..but tenue de ville means proper attire as in business casual or business attire and not jeans and trainers/tennis shoes.

casual business [business trousers or nice trousers and nice shirt]
business [well, we all know this. French women get more freedom here]
semi-formal [Vaughb\'s bow ties for men!!]
formal [black tie TENUE DE SOIREE OR SMOKING]
and a TOP HAT and TAILS in the morning, says you\'ve kicked the damn bucket....

One final thought: STREET CLOTHES means NOT professional clothes...IE civilian dress rather than military uniform but street clothes does not specify the level of formality.

town clothes for the civilians
According to my dictionnary
30 mins
lounge suit for civilians
Robert and Collins has tenue de ville as lounge suit (Brit)/town suit (USA) for men, and town dress/suit for women - I've only heard of lounge suit (but then I'm a Brit). Link below describes different suits for weddings, including regimental/Blues uniform - could that work for tenue de sortie?

formal wear for civilians
In North America, at least, formal wear is the most common term equivalent to tenue de ville. It means suits for men and -- depending on the time of day -- cocktail dresses, gowns etc for women. More formal still is 'black tie' which would mean tuxedoes (smoking est le mot français) for men.
Be aware that American men are so casual these days that to get them out of a t-shirt and running shoes and into a suit and leather shoes will require stern phraseology.

: no..it is not street clothes...en France on dit tenue de ville et on ne veut pas dire jeans et basquettes...though street clothes could mean that!

suit and tie
This is "officially" known as "informal" - semi-formal being bow ties. Women are expected to know what to wear accordingly. Yes it's sexist; women get more choice - dresses or suits.

: AKA business attire both in the UK and US, either Labor or Conservative...:)

Discussion
moi j'ai pens "service dress" (pour tenue de sortie), pour la tenue de ville je sche et pour la "tenue de travail" "business dress"... mai most unhappy, sure you'll find better
