French term

faire mieux endosser

French to English Other Other
xx fut demandé d’agir comme messager pour ensuite faire mieux endosser ce meurtre par les détenus de race noir.

I'm unclear here if they wanted to use xx as messenger and have the murder blamed on black inmates or so that the murder by the black inmates would go off better.

Can anyone clarify?

was asked to take/carry/bring the message / to act as a go-between so that black inmates c/would (subsequently/then/as a result) be more easily blamed for the murder.

Would be easier if we knew the skin colour of the persons murdered and/or murdering and/or carrying the message, tout le contexte, quoi! Had the murder already taken place at this point, or was it yet to happen, still in the premeditation stage, etc?

My interpretation somehow assumes that black inmates were NOT responsible for the murder.

XX was asked to act as a messenger so that he was in a better position to have, for this murder, the blame put on black prisoners.

agree Bourth (X) : More or less, though I think "HE was in a better position" has nothing to do with it. See below.

cheers Bourth, I just thought that would be the clearest way to turn the sentence

xx was asked to play messenger here so the black inmates could then more easily back it up

endosser means to agree to something BUT...
faire endosser le meutre par les détenues...to have them back it up...not commit it...at least in this sentences

to endosser something= to back something up...not to do it...
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tom Bishop : "faire endosser à qqn la responsabilité de qqch" = "make sb shoulder the responsibility for" which is not the same thing as backing up..

there is no mention of responsibility....back up here, anyway, there is not enough context
disagree Karin Dyson : sorry, but agree with Tom
