French term

cretons feroces

French to English Other Other book on gardens and parks
book on gardens and parks: describing a garden which has ... "Curiosités artistiques en prime. Une grille à tête de chiens" garde l'entrée et un muret à "cretons féroces" - des dos de crocodiles - sépare le jardin des fleurs du potager."
I've nothing in dictionnaries for "creton" but have found various cooking recipes where this term comes up. I'm wondering if these are in fact the triangular points on the back of a crocodile. Like triangles sticking up, if so how do you say it?!
All ideas welcome !
Thanks in advance...

ferocious spikes

This seems to be a type of tile designed to resemble a crocodile's back. The correct spelling is 'créton', from 'crête', I imagine: see picture on FR site below
Peer comment(s):

agree Peter Shortall : Or ridges, maybe - technically "scutes", I believe. Not sure why anyone would want to put pork fat/spread on their garden wall...

thanks Peter, 'ridges' is maybe better, in fact:-)

greaves / cracklings (from rendered pig's fat)

"creton" according to Harrap's 1934 dictionary for what it's worth
but also "dog biscuit"??
