French term

Des cas d’envies

French to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
"Des cas d’envies et/ou de comportements impulsifs ont été rapportés chez des patients"
Again, new package insert blurb. The only ideas I've come up with so far are "incidences of urges/cravings/desires and/or impulsive behavior have been reported...", but am sure there's a better solution out there somewhere.
Thanks in advance.

Drmanu49 Dec 9, 2007:
Oops, sorry for the repeated comment. I just meant to say that you can change the entry yourself or by asking Anne.
Drmanu49 Dec 9, 2007:
I disagree with the chosen answer, an urge can be something completely different and for the words which were not in the question, Sue is right it is compulsive.
Jonathan MacKerron (asker) Dec 9, 2007:
I went with "unusual urges and/or compulsive behaviour", which I basically lifted from package insert wording I found in in the Internet
Jonathan MacKerron (asker) Dec 9, 2007:
Manu, you're right - I forgot to change the "impulsive" to "compulsive" but probably too late to change it now, or is it?

Bourth (X) Dec 4, 2007:
Won't most things except voting Bush get you arrested in Texas?
Julie Barber Dec 4, 2007:
arrested in Texas for something interesting sounds like it would beat sitting in the office ! ;-)
Dr Sue Levy (X) Dec 4, 2007:
Best avoid Texas then ;-)
Jonathan MacKerron (asker) Dec 4, 2007:
@Sue - thanks for the link, I'd love to go with my urges, might get me arrested in Texas though...

Jonathan MacKerron (asker) Dec 4, 2007:
here's the entire sentence
"Des cas d’envies et/ou de comportements impulsifs (attirance compulsive pour les jeux d’argent ou une augmentation des pulsions sexuelles) ont été rapportés chez des patients atteints de la maladie de Parkinson traités par des agonistes dopaminergiques, dont XXX"
Dr Sue Levy (X) Dec 4, 2007:
See "compulsive behaviour" in the context of treatment of Parkinson's disease. Big news at the moment. http://www.economist.com/science/displayStory.cfm?story_id=4...
Anne de Freyman (X) Dec 4, 2007:
cravings and urges seem perfect to me.

cases of urges and impulsive behaviour

It all depends on whether they are sexual or other.

envies could also be cravings or longings. Could be desire if sexual but then the French would say "désir"

neutral Dr Sue Levy (X) : it's compulsive behaviour in English//indeed, "impulsive behaviour" exists, but this is not what is being referred to here in this particular context

You're right Sue. I checked the Robert and in medical terminology the French impulsif = the English compulsive.
agree MMFORREST : yes, compulsive.

agree Arleene McFarlane : agree with compulsive as well

neutral Julie Barber : are you sure? I know that anti-depressants can do that, although looking around on the net also throws up examples of "envies suicidaires"! Unless we have 'envies + definition" it would seem to be more along the lines of 'urges'...

Yes, that is the case of a well known antidepressor.
disagree Dr Sue Levy (X) : no not here

for info

if you google the entire sentence....

I'd go with your own suggestion or Anne's as the type of urge isn't defined.
Note from asker:
Hi Julie, I too was assuming that this is some kind of standard blurb
