French term

bande graphique

French to English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology)
I am finalising a translation into English on a computer-based event recording system. More than once I have come up against the term "bande graphique" and have changed my mind 4 times on how to translate this. Can someone make it up for me?
"Pour récupérer et analyser une bande graphique du système XXX, vous devez d'abord interroger le serveur XXX...

"Le fichier de la bande graphique" (they are recording incidents..)

Sorry not to have more to offer but the term crops up in laconic phrases of this type only and there are no images tol put me on the right track

Strange that there's a mix of analogue and digital technology - "bande" and "interroger le serveur", very curious. Bon courage, nasty one!
Julia Gal Jun 11, 2004:
Ah, OK. In that case I think it probably means a strip chart (used in graphic recorders or monitors). Like this: http://www.geneq.com/catalog/en/type_a71_chart_recorder.htm
Non-ProZ.com Jun 11, 2004:
Julia I can confidently say there is NO video involved. This is in fact about high-speed trains and I know for a fact that they tape a lot of information and record of lot also on computer but...
Julia Gal Jun 11, 2004:
Hmm. If they are filming an event for safety reasons, presumably they will be looking at the stills from the video recording. Perhaps they just mean the "video tape" (if the file was made from a taped film, maybe, then recorded digitally)?
Non-ProZ.com Jun 11, 2004:
Julia I think the context rules your answer out. They are recording things like speed and distance so that, in the event of incident (failure) or accident, they can pinpoint the circumstances.
I have found "band chart" but am very suspicious. I have contacted the client but he is in Korea...

strip chart

Well, it seems to me from your description as if this is literally a 'strip', and it is clearly some kind of graph, so maybe 'chart' would do?
This puts me in mind of the tachograph discs used in lorries, coaches etc., that similarly record (simplified!) data for the duration of a trip.
I hope that may be able to send your research of in the right direction, at least!

agree Julia Gal : Yes. I think this is what it is, given the additional context.

Or possibly even just "video file".

It literally means "graphic track" or "graphic recording". I'm pretty certain that this term originally referred to the reel-to-reel films, where the pictures were on one reel and the sound on another ("soundtrack"), although now, obviously, it is all done digitally...
