porte sous tenture

French to English Other Architecture office layout
Apparently "tenture" can mean wallpaper.

Well in this text describing the process of transforming an office, I can't see what's going on.

"Il intervient sur l’agencement boiserie avec l’intégration de placards de rangement courbes, le tout verni. Il imagine également l’habillage de porte sous tenture, le mobilier du bureau et de l’informatique, la table de réunion…"

papered / fabric covered door

"Tenture" is indeed a fancy, possibly up-market term for "papier peint", usually if it is a heavy, elaborate paper and especially if it is in fact a fabric. If you live in France you must have seen places with fabric wall coverings, usually over a foam material. Considered by many to be up-market, "bourgeois", personally I mistrust the finishing, suspecting that they only do it because the wall underneath is too badly damaged to take paper without replastering first! In addition, disguising a door in this way makes people feel aristocratic, since it's the sort of thing you see in châteaux, doors dissimulated in wainscots or under "heavy" paper wall coverings.

Une porte perdue porte en arasement du nu d'un mur ou d'une cloison : ces portes sont souvent CACHEES SOUS TENTURE, c'est-à-dire sous le papier peint qui tend la pièce.

Maybe FABRIC COVERED DOORS? I really like the idea of the invisible door -- conceal it with wall paper so that it looks like a wall until you open it.

Mr. Sanders made a series of substitutions: sage-colored, FABRIC-COVERED DOORS made by Home Works in SoHo to hide the dressing room rather than a wall of walnut paneling, and in the bathroom, Kohler faucets instead of Dornbracht.

In an office, fabric coverings on walls and doors will also help deaden sound, of course, depriving secretaries listening at doors of the latest gossip.

covering the door under drapes

so that it will give a homogeneous appearance
Peer comment(s):

agree Christopher Crockett : Sounds reasonable, to "dress" the door with drapes. Rarely seen in real life, however.
