French term

parcours d'autonomie

French to English Other Architecture landscaping
Hello again,

I'm having trouble with this term pertaining to landscaping adapted to disabled people (wheelchairs, etc.). Does anyone know what an "aire d'évolution" would be? Here's the context:
"Les aménagements extérieurs, les cours de récréation ainsi que les patios intérieurs sont accessibles aux chaises roulantes, et incluent une aire d’évolution et un parcours d’autonomie."

Thanks again for your help!

Dana Pottratz (asker) Jan 4, 2007:
Thanks to you all for your ideas and help I ended up creating the term "autonomous play area" and not simply a path suited to wheelchair users. This goes along with the idea of an "aire d'évolution" as a "wheelchair usable playground (as opposed to a wheelchair accessible playground") which was provided by Bourth (see link http://www.knottyboy.com/learn/social-eco-action.php)

route for self-propelled / unaided wheelchair users?
CMJ_Trans (X) Jan 2, 2007:
it is referring to paths or itineraries that those in wheelchairs can negotiate on their own without having to be assisted by an able-bodied person.

idea

While researching your other term a little, I came across the notion of providing play areas (notably climbing frames) where the wheelchair-bound could get out of their chairs and move about. Might this be regarded as "autonomy", as opposed to relying on a chair for mobility? Certainly the idea of a "jungle gym" as I grew up with, or overhead bars, or indeed those multicoloured plasticky things one sees in playgrounds these days, with ropes and ladders and swing bridges and overhead rungs could be described as a "parcours".

<<Don't teenagers usually stand around and smoke cigarettes during their breaks? >>

Not if they're in wheelchairs, they don't.
Note from asker:
This does sound quite possible, but as it's a school for older kids (highschool) do you think they would actually be playing? Don't teenagers usually stand around and smoke cigarettes during their breaks?
Correction: I just found a text on the school which shows that it accommodates children of all ages, from 6 on upwards. So you're playground ideas would seem to fit. Thanks so much!

adventure playground (for handicapped children)

Comes up time and time again on Google.
"Chelsea Adventure Playground for Handicapped Children"" An Adventure Playground for Handicapped Children in London.""From then on the movement grew to provide adventure playgrounds for children with disabilities and included the formation of the Handicapped Adventure Playground Association, currently known as Kidsactive."

accessible playground

"Guidelines for Safe, Accessible Playgrounds

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires that all public accommodations, including recreational areas like playgrounds, be accessible to individuals with disabilities."
Example sentence:

Located between the wheelchair accessible nature trail and the wheelchair accessible playground, the new lot provides over 30 parking spots for those in our community who utilize the project.
