former comme

Hello!
DOC: 1907 Museum catalog of ancient mirrors - Introduction, section about dating the mirrors.
ATTEMPT: I understand the phrase without comme: which forms the early basis of Egyptian writing.
My author's use of comme here is confusing, can anyone enlighten me, please?
Thank you in advance!

Discussion

Jade-Roxanne Garnham Feb 17, 2017:
a colloquial "like" or "what we would consider as" I think this is one of those sentences worded a little awkwardly in French, but in some instances "comme" is used as "like", "basically", "almost" or even "what we would consider as".

Here I think it would translate as "which forms what we would consider as the early basis of Egyptian writing", but I don't see the paraphrasing as necessary given the context.

I would probably keep it simple as you suggested: "which forms the early basis of Egyptian writing".

Hope this helps for future reference!

comme It's not really former comme.
It's more like "which is seen as forming". Or "which to some extent forms".
Qui + verb + comme = which + verb + like.
e.g. "qui sonne comme" = which sounds like
or "qui ressemble à" = which looks like
qui forme comme = which forms/forming something like
