English term

you may depend on it

English Art/Literary Religion
Context:

"If you find your life of prayer to be always so short, and so easy, and so spiritual, as to be without cost and strain and sweat to you, you may depend upon it, you have not yet begun to pray."

I just don't understand the connection between "you may depend upon it" and the rest of the sentence.

Can anybody please enlighten me?

My understanding so far: if your life of prayer is short and easy and spiritual, and if you don't have to make any efforts, .... that's because you haven't really begun to pray (you're not actually praying).

What do you guys think?

Thanks!!

agree Rachel Fell : agree with Armorel, "you can be sure that..." - to me, the "may" could suggest some uncertainty these days

Thanks Rachel. Interesting - for me, in this phrase, "may" doesn't carry uncertainty. But I can well believe it may for some speakers.

Thanks Louisa.
agree Sheila Wilson : It's a set expression, and I don't think that using "can" changes the meaning. It should express uncertainty, I suppose, so it must be an exception.

you may be complacent with what is not really a prayer-life

My take
