Another definition:

The Proto-Indo-European system of root vowel alternations. There existed the following variants or \"grades\" of ablaut: full (or \"e\") grade, full grade with ablaut (or \"o\"), lengthened grade, lengthened grade with ablaut, and zero grade. The results of this alternation can be seen in the following ModE related words (listed in the same order as the above grades): sit, sat, seat, soot, nest; and also in the English strong verb system.

Of, relating to, or being a grammatical case indicating separation....

Short for "ablative" I assume?

Definition:
"Of, relating to, or being a grammatical case indicating separation, direction away from, sometimes manner or agency, and the object of certain verbs. It is found in Latin and other Indo-European languages."

Ablaut, definition

Hello Clarisa,

If the Linguistics context applies here, then we believe you are looking for "ABLAUT"...

If so..Ablaut is the change of vowel which causes a word to take different grammatical function. For example, in the forms of the verb "drink" one change of vowel produces a past tense "drank", and another produces the past participle "drunk".
This kind of relationship between vowels is also called "vowel gradation". It is very commmon in Indo-European languages.

Good Luck,
ARTES, Arthur and Rachel.
