English term

any one ... several ....together.

English Medical Linguistics
Preferably, in the liquid culture medium, the nitrogen source should include any one of silkworm chrysalis powder, protein peptone, milk powder, yeast powder, and lactalbumin hydrolysate, or several of these materials together.

Is there a better way to express the meaning? :-)

Thank you in advance!

agree Tony M : Yes, that's a good way to go too

thank you
agree Naikei Wong : this can serve to express the number of material species involved (without confusing with the amounts of species)

agree Chris More (X) : definitely better to have the defining clause at the beginning, with colon even better

omit "any one"

It should say:

...the nitrogen source should include silkworm chrysalis powder, protein peptone, milk powder, yeast powder, lactalbumin hydrolysate, or several of these materials together.

Please note I also omitted the "and" you had in front of lactalbumin hydrolysate.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : No, that intorduces confusion, since from the start of the list, it sounds like it means 'all of the following', and then when you get to the end, the 'or several...' is puzzling

any one (or several) of: ...

I think what you've got is fine, although I would be inclined to add a colon : to introduce the list (as in Airmailrpl's example)

It might be slightly tidier to bring the 'or several' up to the front as I've suggested above --- the brackets aren't obligatory, but maybe help make the sense clear...
Peer comment(s):

agree RHELLER : I just love those colons :-)

any one of the following:

This will help to keep it as near to the original as possible, and still allows for the final phrase: "or several of these materials together"

Thanks Peter!
agree Bailatjones : think this is succinct, but would maybe put 'the several' somewhere at the beginning

agree RHELLER : also a good option

one, more or all of the following materials

"More" could be taken to extend as far upwards as "all", but it is still good English to specify this if the original does.
