Hello everyone,

- There was definitely times where there was an intense dislike.
- It wasn't that, you know, if I see him in an alley, I want to cut his throat...
- ***You realize that if we dug deep enough, there was something about it that was magical.***
- If they had had a dinner party, and they had sat us next to each other -- would have never happened. Would not have happened. And even today, you know, don't set a place at your table for dinner Mac.
- Don't worry.
"You realize that if we dug deep enough, there was something about it that was magical."
What's the general meaning of the sentence in this context?
Thank you.

their intense rivalry meant their matches had something magical about them
it's clear from other stuff Mc Enroe says later that he admired Connors..if you dug (looked) deep enough, below the surface of rivalry and dislike
Connors seemed to resent everyone who played tennis because he was not from the same class and he figured he had to fight harder for everything. It says later on that he was never one of the boys=never part of the gang.
and Mc says:
.." Part of why I loved him was that the establishment hated him.
00:21:45 I just intuited that this guy was against something, and I was on his side, and I liked his style." = Mc Enroe admired Connors
00:21:50 >> It was hard not to get drawn in by his game."= something magical about it
Connors' attitude is that no one would have dared sit them necxt to each other at a dinner party...not even today!
So Mc admired Connors' gutsiness and fight and knew that any match with him would be intense and tough to the very end as Connors was a bit of a comeback character. The rivalry and dislike meant that every match had some sort of magic about the encounter ...
It could also be read that the rivalry was so intense there was something magical about it but I think the matches are more likely to have been magical because of the intense rivalry and dislike...

as Dariusz has pointed out, the rivalry was off-court as well.
Here is a link which shows how they liked to get up each
other's nose...Mac decided to invite Connors to dinner (in a restaurant) so he could boast about his own coaching, even offering to pay as Connors was "broke", but Connors almost tricked him ...

Darius Saczuk
: I agree. Despite their mutual dislike, McEnroe admits there was something extraordinary about their on-court and off-court rivalry.

: Nicely explained. I wonder whether "if we dug deep enough" might imply both of them going to the limit of their resources in their matches, bringing out the very best of themselves?

Thanks:-) Indeed there are several levels of meaning here and they certainly went all out to try and gain victory over the other.
