English term

tie it off

English Other Construction / Civil Engineering manuale giardinaggio creativo
In un manuale sul giardinaggio creativo (sic) ho questa frase:
Tie string to one nail and pull it tight to the other nail; tie it off.

Il problema sorge con "tie it off". non riesco a trovare niente di accettabile...

The string is already tied to one nail. You 'tie it off' at the other end, i.e. tie it to the other nail to secure it.

agree orientalhorizon : in this case, yes.

Thank you - yes, 'off' can be understood in different ways according to context. Here it gives the idea of 'finishing' (in other contexts, it could be 'separating').

agree David Moore (X) : Tie IT off = secure it to (the second nail).

Thank you, David. That's right, 'it' refers to the string.
agree Ken Cox : The string is presumably longer than necessary to reach between the two nails, and it must be secured to the second nail so it does not go slack. The 'extra' string might be extended from there to another point, left as is, or cut off.

Thank you, Ken. Extended to another point? Maybe, though I tend to think there's a certain finality about 'tie it off'. At any rate, the 'tying off' is done at the end of this particular length of string that has to be kept taut.
agree axies : yes, secure it.

tie them together

Finish tieing them together
Peer comment(s):

agree orientalhorizon : tying up and fixing the string ends at the nails respectively.

disagree David Moore (X) : "Them" here is incorrect; the instruction is "tie IT off"
