Estoy colaborando con una sociedad bíblica en la revisión de una traducción antigua de la Biblia al español (Revisión Reina Valera 1909). En el capítulo 2 Samuel 2, versículo 9, los traductores han decidido sustituir los nombres de los padres de las naciones respresentadas con los gentilicios de dichas naciones. Han cambiado "Gesur" a "asuritas". (Nota: en traducciones más modernas, la palabra "Gesur" figura como "Gesuri".)

Asiria es el nombre del antiguo país cuyos habitantes se llamaban asirios. Se encontraba en la llanura mesopotámica superior, limitado al O por el desierto sirio, al S por el Jebel Hamrín y Babilonia, y al N y E por los montes urartianos (armenios) y persas. La parte más fértil y más densamente poblada de Asiria se encontraba al E del río central denominado Tigris (“Hidekel”, Gn. 2.14). El heb. "assur" (as. "assur") se usa tanto para el territorio como para sus habitantes. I started by looking up that verse.
King James version: 2 Samuel 2:9 "the Ashurites"
Biblica Hebraica Stuggartensia (transliterated from Hebrew) speaks of "the ashur" people

Comparando las tres traducciones de Reina Valera que están en biblegateway.com con King James y el original en hebreo, lo que tendría que hacer notar es que son nombres diferentes. No sé por qué Reina Valera habla de Gesuritas cuando el original dice Asuritas! Son letras marcadamente diferentes en hebreo (gimel y aleph), y aleph es una letra fuerte, que no desaparece así como así. Parecería que hubo una confusión en las traducciones de Reina Valera, me aventuraría a sugerir, y por algún motivo hablan de gesuritas cuando el original dice asuritas...

Siento la confusión! No sabía cómo poner la respuesta, siendo que parece que asuritas y gesuritas fueran dos pueblos diferentes. Lo que está claro es que en ese versículo la biblia hebrea dice Asuritas (Ashuritas si hemos de ser más exactos, dice ashuri' que es la forma "construct" de ashurim, plural de ashur, los del pueblo de Ashur por tanto.

A veces me resulta útil comparar qué han hecho en otros idiomas. En la más reciente traducción revisada en Sueco (Svenska Folkbibeln) el versículo reza

O sea, "asuritas". :) Igual que en hebreo.
Como te decía en las notas de arriba, yo diría que se hace referencia a dos pueblos diferentes. Y si tu pregunta es qué debería poner en 2 Samuel 2:9, la Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia ("la original"), así como la magnífica traducción de King James, y la última traducción sueca, todas hablan de los asuritas.
