Hughes marketed the start-up and literally put Half.com on the map by convincing Halfway, Oregon to rename itself to Half.com, Oregon...creating the first dot-com city in America. The buzz generating event was dubbed by Time magazine as \"one of the greatest publicity coups\" in history.

Within weeks of launching, Half.com was featured on the Today Show, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and received over 40 million print impressions from the Half.com Oregon idea. 19 days after his Half.com Oregon event, eBay contacted Half.com and later acquired the company for over $300 million.

Este es un ejemplo de una campaña innovadora o pionera, como creo que es el significado de \"buzz-generating\".

English term (edited): buzz generating campaigns

campañas «de boca-oreja»

Tal como lo entiendo yo sobra la coma entre "generating" y "campaigns".

"Even buzz-generating campaigns like the Energizer Bunny ads, Nike's "Just Do It" commercials, and Budweiser's "Whassup?" TV spots (the most honored in advertising history) have been unable to prevent significant losses in market share. Advertising, the Rieses conclude, is simply not able to fulfill its most basic mandate -- the creation of brand loyalty."

Está muy relacionado con estrategias "word-of-mouth" y el "viral marketing".

"Word-of-mouth promotion has become an increasingly potent force, capable of catapulting products from obscurity into runaway commercial successes. Harry Potter, collapsible scooters, the Chrysler PT Cruiser, and The Blair Witch Project are all recent examples of the considerable power of buzz. Yet many top executives and marketing managers are misinformed about the phenomenon and remain enslaved to some common myths. In her article, author Renee Dye explores the truth behind these myths. As globalization and brand proliferation continue, writes Dye, buzz may come to dominate the shaping of markets. Indeed, companies that are unable to control buzz may soon find the phenomenon controlling them."

En España se ha hecho popular el nombre de «boca-oreja», que algunos critican, pero otros aceptan. Si buscas en Google «boca-oreja» y buzz encontrarás varios lugares donde lo relacionan directamente.

Suerte,

Gonzalo
