A psychoanalyst -dead not many years- showed to certain of his friends and patients photographs of ancient statues in perspectives that stressed the action of time: missing limbs, worn surfaces, features eaten by long erosion. His subjects-so he reports- were invariably uneasy, both attracted and repelled at the sight of these beautiful and ruined objects. Clearly, they felt themselves guilty, having in their hearts willed always death and torture and a slow grinding away of the human form.
