Recent economic modelling has looked at ways of limiting the over-supply of REDD+ credits, e.g. via buffering, supplementarity limits and allowance banking. It has been found that there are difficulties in matching supply and demand so as to prevent a carbon price crash (through “flooding” the carbon market with REDD+ credits), while at the same time raising sufficient funding to have an impact on reducing rates of deforestation.

For example, bank recapitalisation has provided a cushion against asset impairment but much of the capital buffer provided has been absorbed by banks in provisioning against future asset impairments. Banks have already taken steps to address the problem of impaired assets.
