Without more context, I can't think of what specifically the original word could be. It could be an academic title such as Ph.d, etc.

A very interesting question. I think you can leave it as such in the translation.

Z"l is a "title" given to the deceased (in religious context). A deceased rabbi may take the title zt"l. Please see the ref. for details.
