full phrase is:
A "Corrogram" shows the usable thickness range of the instrument together with a specific probe, when echoes are reflected from small targets compared to the cross section of the sound beam of the probe instead from a plane and extended back-wall.
The whole phrase sounds a bit messy, but the very last part (cross section of the sound beam etc.) is the trickiest. Any suggestion on how to translate this?

secondo me sta parlando di cosa accade quando il fascio di onde viene riflesso non da una parete (back-wall) ma da un oggetto molto più piccolo rispetto alla sezione trasversale dell'intero fascio di onde emesse.
L'intero spezzone di frase sarebbe:
... quando l'eco viene generato da oggetti piccoli rispetto all'intera sezione del fasci di onde emesse...
