At the end of 1921, the premises of the Czech Amateur Photographer’s Club hosted an exhibition of work by Drahomír Josef Růžička, a Czech-American, who as an active member of the U.S. photographic movement pioneered the direct image photography promoted by Alfred Stieglitz and Clarence H. White. Růžička’s own work showed an apparent inclination toward themes, motifs, composition, an emphasis on illumination effects as well as the employment of soft-focus objectives influenced by Impressionist and Art Nouveau Pictorialism, however; by rejecting pigment processes and by applying the non-interference principle to the process of working with negatives, his work may already be classified as so-called Purist Pictorialism. Růžička’s work strongly influenced especially his younger contemporaries, who, following his example, began to favour gelatine silver prints.
