4-D CT Simulator is a CT or "cat" scanner with special software. During a 4-D CT scan, data is collected in discreet packets of time that are correlated with patient motion such as breathing. This allows doctors to "gate" or plan radiation treatment around your breathing or other motions your body makes at rest. Die Schwächungswerte werden in sogenannte CT-Zahlen umgerechnet und diese auf der Hounsfield-Skala ausgegeben. Luft hat definitionsgemäß die CT-Zahl -1000 und Wasser den Wert 0. Der Grund für die Umrechnung ist, dass die spektrale Zusammensetzung der Röntgenstrahlung in Abhängigkeit von Aufnahmeparametern und verwendeter Vorfilterung stark variiert. Ein CT-Bild, das Schwächungswerte direkt darstellen würde, würde jeweils unterschiedlich ausfallen. Eine Vergleichbarkeit von Bildern, wie sie für die Befundung in der Medizin unabdingbar ist, wäre so nicht möglich. Durch Normierung der gemessenen Schwächung auf die Schwächungswerte von Wasser und Luft wird dieses Problem umgangen. Für die bildliche Darstellung wird jeder CT-Zahl ein Grauwert zugeordnet. Da das menschliche Auge nicht in der Lage ist, diese 4000 Grauwerte zu differenzieren, wird die Fensterung je nach untersuchtem Organsystem anders gewählt.
