WLAN connection problems due to XP SP2? Thread poster: heikeb

I have two laptops connected to a WLAN. I recently installed Service Pack 2 on the new computer; no programm-related problems so far.
However, I have problems establishing a connection to my own network!

If I use my older laptop (without SP2), I can connect to my own network without problems. However, with the new laptop, ever so often I end up connected to somebody else's unprotected network with a different address and bad signal strength - although "officially", according to the utility, I'm still connected to my own network. However, if I check the IP Address with ipconfig, it has changed. The connection just switches back and forth.
Under Available Networks, I can see another network; connecting to this network shows me the same wrong IP address with ipconfig, so I suspect that I might end up connected to one of my neighbour's network.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar or has any idea what might cause this problem? ▲ Collapse | | | Tadzio (X) English to Spanish SP2: a real problem... | Jan 9, 2005 |
Hi Heike,
I only know that "service pack 2" is not good for Win XP. I have a PC, but still the same: everything went wrong, so I uninstalled the "update", and all came back to normal.

SP 2 is important for the computer's safety. Fairy tales about problems come from wrong (or even missing) configurations, conflicts of drivers and lack of basic skills on the side of users.
There has been never said that installing and configuring an operating system is as easy as setting a clock.
There is an old and maybe harsh advice: RTFM.
Regards

I installed SP2 soon after it became available without any problems with software or network connections. Some settings had to be adjusted indeed, but that is the case for more or less every new installation that affects the system. I agree with Andrzej in that a new installation of anything sometimes conflicts with some setting that was wrong from scratch but the problem was not visible before. But these things keep appearing on every computer and must be solved every day taking into consideration the specifics of people's configurations. The answer is in learning the basics, not making general statements.

My point of view is, one shouldn't generate general statements only for the reason that a particular action on her/his computer has failed. I have two systems, a PC and a notebook, and both are running smoothly. But this requires a lot of fine-tunning, some knowledge and experience, and quite a lot of time, unfortunately, at least in the initial stage.
Instead of banning SP2, I strongly recommend you to look for an experienced user, a friend or colleague, or last but not least for an IT specialist, who can do this for you.
Even if you have to pay for the work to be done, you will experience much greater comfort while working and finally you will save a lot of time = money.
You don't need to be ashamed - someone translating poetry or even plain marketing texts does not necessarily has to be a computer guru.
Don't treat your machine as an enemy - it is your best friend
Good luck and more satisfaction

SP2 has a bit more advanced firewall with more settings on as default, so it is worth an effort to go through them to check if something really blocks the access. There is a log file (pfirewall.log in Windows folder) where you can check whether any connections were allowed or rejected, and if rejected - why.
As for connecting other networks, try filtering and encrypting your network. The simplest filtering is done according to the MAC address and encrypting should be always on to provide the simplest protection of your network. If you have the MAC filtering on in the gateway you will not be granted access to the network, because the new computer has a different MAC.
With encrypting on you shouldn't be able to connect with other networks. It the encryption key is different in both computers you likewise will not be able to establish the connection. I also had a problem with WAN card driver, which somehow used to lose the encryption key and I had to input it again, when I updated the driver everything worked just fine.

You simply wrote "refrain from SP2" and did not in any way explain why... That is what disturbs me really.
I could state "refrain from car XYZ" or something similar - what do you mean, would this be OK?
Regards
Jerzy
PS
Your statement can be proved wrong: I´m accessing Internet just at the moment via LAN/WLAN and using Windows with SP2 on all my PCs (2 connected via wired LAN, notebook and one PC connected via WLAN to the same router) - no problems at all.
