Mervyn Henderson wrote: I must admit, Jan, when I saw your post I thought, "Here comes some Grand Auto Theft Violence Plus" rappa-gangsta poetry, considering your comments in the past about the games you translate and I think you have your doubts about. Seeing the "scissors" bit kind of confirmed that for a second or two, but then it develops into something rather different. Not Four and Twenty Blackbirds, but rather moving in its way. I suppose we all have a moving childhood poem or song we know by heart. I have a couple, but they're much too embarrassing! Unfortunately my post was censored. It was a great little poem, and a heartfelt tribute to a great teacher, and I'm happy I had the chance to read it. Danke schön, Jan! I'm saying it again, maybe we should limit our conversations to weapons, they don't mind them over the pond. Apparently, they're not as offensive and dangerous as poetry. Another interesting thread doomed to disappear shortly. There was a nice post which arose With some rather interesting prose "Enough!" someone rapped, And so it was zapped It seems that anything goes (like this one will, probably)

[Edited at 2020-12-11 12:42 GMT] I've always known you're Aladdin Sane, Mervyn. In case I'd be zapped for good this time, let me just tell you all that it's been a hugely enjoyable pleasure to hang out here with you lot, in those last months. You've made me laugh, cry, think, think again, and appreciate how close we can be, even when speaking different languages, coming from different countries and cultures. Brace yourselves for the really schmaltzy yet sincere part: I love all of you, and wish you well. I bid you farewell, ladies and gentlemen. And, since this is the Poetry corner, let me whisper For auld lang syne. In case I'm overstating the importance of my previous statements, and no one gives a flying duck about my strong opinions: "Hello there, fellow translators, I'm back! Try and put up with me for the foreseeable future." | | | expressisverbis Portugal Local time: 07:19 Mitglied (2015) Englisch > Portugiesisch + ... I highly recommend it! | Dec 11, 2020 |

This was my very first encounter with the Bard, in my Italian school, I must have been around 13. Our teacher made us listen to an audio tape, and, if memory serves me well, it was the voice of sir John Gielgud. It's still my favourite sonnet: When to the sessions of sweet silent thought I summon up remembrance of things past, I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought, And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste: Then can I drown an eye, unused to flow, For precious friends hid in death's dateless night, And weep afresh love's long since cancelled woe, And moan the expense of many a vanished sight: Then can I grieve at grievances foregone, And heavily from woe to woe tell o'er The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan, Which I new pay as if not paid before. But if the while I think on thee, dear friend, All losses are restor'd and sorrows end. ▲ Collapse | | | Mervyn Henderson (X) Spanien Local time: 08:19 Spanisch > Englisch + ...
As you know, PLF, I more or less shunned his sonnets, preferring his plays (more laughs!!), but I think I'll take a closer look at my dog-eared Complete Works now. "Fore-bemoaned moan" - there's a phrase you don't see every day. Either now, or four centuries ago. Edit: Sorry. Naturally I meant to say "shunn'd" and dog-ear'd" above.
