Hello,
I'm actually in my master in translation and I have to write a research paper about CAT Tools. Basically I have to compare one ore more CAT Tools to the markt leader Trados. Can you give me any suggestion about the most frequently used CAT tools? I'm also wondering about the functionality of the free CAT Tools? Are they performing well? And what about compatibility between the different tools?

OmegaT is terrific. I never leave home without it. I've never felt inclined to pay for a CAT, when such a great tool is available free and open source, with a users group to help solve problems.

The downloadable file is very large (865 MB), the whole installation process takes almost half-an-hour on a system with a super-fast solid-state drive (SSD) and Across gobbles up 3.5 GB in total, 1.5 GB of which is allocated to three databases.
It is very hard to uninstall everything installed by Across and several users have reported Across totally wrecked their computers.

This topic has been discussed exhaustively on various Proz forums pertaining to CAT tools. If you take some time to read what's in the archives, you will really not need more input from people here.
On Across: I agree with what Samuel wrote. I used Across for awhile, and found it really confusing to use, and it kept freezing up the computer.

In my opinion the OP is going to get better answers quicker if he just asks and engaged with people here, instead of trawling through thousands of old posts to find that one piece of information that he craves. I certainly don't mind rereading threads like this. Every now and then you learn something new again.

Trados Workbench (aka Trados 2007) offered two translation modes, and MS Word-based was only one of them. The other mode was TagEditor, which is not MS Word-based, and which is currently one of the most frequently requested formats in my neck of the woods. I get the feeling that the MS Word-based mode of Trados 2007 is somewhat of a relic, these days.

PS: @Samuel: Point taken about Workbench. I was just using it as shorthand as most people think of Word when they hear Workbench. In any case, all the CAT tools are just there for illustrative purposes. I think it is important to approach things systematically and abstractly, at the outset.
