A passion for music and a keen interest in languages led him to pursue degrees in opera performance... at Brandon University and the University of British Columbia.
Upon completing his musical studies, Jamie joined the Opéra de Montréal's Atelier Lyrique as their resident tenor, singing French opera on tour from Rouyn-Noranda to Moncton. Two years and countless high Cs later, Jamie had become a fervent admirer of Canada's vibrant French-language communities.
As his singing career expanded across the country, Jamie's interest in cross-cultural communication grew. He enrolled in a French translation course at York University's Glendon College between opera engagements, and a week later he knew he had discovered his second passion. Before graduating on the dean's honour roll with a BA in Translation, he interned at the Translation Bureau of Canada, the country's largest translation service provider.
Jamie began freelancing as a translator while he continued to perform with Canada's leading opera companies and musical ensembles including Calgary Opera, Vancouver Opera, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir. After several years successfully juggling two careers, he founded Gaston Murdock, which focuses on translation services for the arts, politics, the social sciences and public administration. A self-confessed political junkie, Jamie's translations have appeared in The Mark News and The Huffington Post. He is also a volunteer translator for Translators Without Borders.
