Many moons ago, I read Dutch law (the hard way: evening classes) at Leiden
University. I took most curricula and a major in Civil Law.
A career in the media/advertising business made me swap studying 5 evenings
per week – just before starting on the final thesis - for working 16 hrs a day
in an international corporate business. It gave me an impressive business card and allowed me
to spend a few years in countries such as Argentina and the Baltic States.
The sabbatical break I took in 2001 in Ireland turned into a
life-changing project during which I decided that my future should be boss-less and
non-corporate.
Given my love of languages, a partly English upbringing and a multilingual
career, becoming a full-time translator was an almost natural thing to do.
As a result of my background I specialise in legal, business and marketing
texts. I have developed good knowledge of common law and have a bookcase filled
with excellent reference material for those typical common law principles and
expressions that someone without the necessary knowledge could easily get lost
in.
You will also find me a great partner for localising your website, as long
as the content is not too technical and does not involve anything medical/biological/scientific/sports or IT related.
Dutch is my native language and although I believe my English is well above
average, I neither consider myself nor pretend to be an English native speaker. One
either is a native speaker or not. There is no such thing as becoming a native
speaker.
I do provide translation services into English, but only for legal subject
matter where thorough understanding of the subject is key. I’ll gladly suggest
an English native colleague to proofread my work in that case.
Completed translation projects include:
- Dozens of GDPR related documents - Summonses, legal correspondence, statements of defence, rulings, etc. - Terms and Conditions, purchase agreements, lease agreements, insurance policies, etc. - Shareholders’ agreements, Articles of Association, etc. - Securities class action lawsuit (20K tr + 30K pr) - Flemish Decrees - Hundreds of thousands of words of government content - Annual reports (tens of thousands of words) - Tourism websites - A wide range of websites covering several industries - Coaching/Kaizen/Lean training for Dutch company (40K) - HR manuals
- OHS reports
- Technical manuals, etc.
