Source text - Chinese 每一个民族或宗教都有他们理想中的天堂，基督教徒有理想中的伊甸园，希腊人的理想中有奥林匹斯神山，中国古人理想中的天堂就是——瑶池仙境。遗憾的是，伊甸园、奥林匹斯神山，至今仅存在于人们的幻想之中。只有中华民族通过自己的聪明才智，把理想中的天堂仙境，创造成了现实的景物，这就是北海。
很多人都听说过瑶池仙境，那些美丽动听的传说原本是讲西域高原上人间仙境的故事。后来的人们就根据这些传说，从远处引来清澈的山泉注入湖泊，在北海这里汇成广阔水域，宽阔的湖面象征着苍茫无际的大海。这里池水清澈，龙舟飞渡。古人们在太液池中垒起高高的山峰，象征着巍峨的昆仑，山上遍植着苍松翠柏，这里春光融融，浓阴遮地，峰秀石奇，宫殿高耸，洞穴迷离，道路深邃，松柏苍翠，鲜花遍地，像令人仰慕的天宫一样壮丽，又像那幻想中神仙居住的地方那么神秘，那山间彩云缭绕飘飘渺渺的景致就像传说中天堂般的意境。从很远的地方就可以看到那神奇的山峰，气势宏伟，十分壮丽，在都城之中形成一块靠着皇宫禁地的优美园林。站在琼华岛上眺望眼前宏伟而幽静的皇宫，可以看到许多隐蔽而又神秘的殿宇，像天宫一样雄伟壮丽，展现着一幅仙宫乐土般的人间仙境。
Translation - English People, regardless of their ethnic background or religion, have found it irresistible to imagine about their paradise. In the case of Christians, they have the Garden of Eden; in the case of Greeks, Mount Olympus; and in the case of ancient Chinese, the Fairyland of the Jade Lake. Regrettably, the Garden of Eden and Mount Olympus, fantastic as they are, only exist in people’s fantasy. Only the Chinese people have, with their wisdom and talents, managed to materialise the “heaven” which only exist in their mind into a real park—Baihai Park.
Many people have heard of the Fairyland of the Jade Park, which originates from the prototype of the "heaven on earth" hidden on the plateau of the West Regions of China described in those beautiful and touching legends. Based upon these legends, people channelled clear water from afar and pooled them together to form a gigantic body of water, Beihai Lake, which, with its vastness, symbolises the seemingly boundless sea. On the surface of the clear water, dragon boats flit here and there. Ancient Chinese piled earth up into lofty hills in Taiye Lake to symbolise the majestic Kunlun Mountains. With the green pines and cypresses planted all over the hills, with those towering palaces and deep caves, with the twining and winding roads, with the ground paved with flowers, the place is as beautiful as Heaven where people aspire to live, as mysterious as the immortals’ abodes. Those colourful clouds floating in the hills give the scenery a celestial beauty. These magical hills can be seen at a distance. They look so majestic and magnificent and form beautiful gardens in the capital near the imperial Forbidden City. Standing on the Jade Islet and looking from above, visitors will surely be impressed by those half-hidden mysterious palaces, as sublime as heavenly palaces, in the grand and tranquil Forbidden City.

Source text - Chinese It is, perhaps, no accident that many of the outstanding figures of the past were exceptionally versatile. Right up until comparatively recent times, it was possible for an intelligent person to acquaint himself with almost every branch of knowledge. Thus, men of genius like Leonardo da Vinci or Sir Philip Sidney, engaged in many careers at once at a matter of course. Da Vinci was so busy with his inventions, that he barely found the time to complete his paintings; Sidney, who died in battle when he was only thirty-two years old, was not only a great soldier, but a brilliant scholar and poet as well. Both these men came very near to fulfilling the Renaissance ideal of the ‘universal man’, the man who was proficient at everything.
Translation - English 过去的许多杰出人物都是非常多才多艺的，这恐怕不是偶然的。直到近代以前，一个人只要脑子好使，还几乎可以熟谙所有学科。于是，像列奥纳多•达•芬奇、菲利普•西德尼这样的天才，理所当然地同时从事许多项事业。达•芬奇忙发明，忙得都没时间完成画作。西德尼虽说年仅三十二岁便战死沙场，却不但是位了不起的军人，而且还是杰出的学者、诗人。这两个人都非常接近文艺复兴时代理想的“通识之士”，也就是事事精通的人。
