Belgians have a fairly precise image of their Department of Justice. They draw it from American lawyer films. Our justice, according to them, works like the Hollywood version of the American one. They also believe it upholds the law. In its abstraction is this a rather unworldy view. Through our taxes, we -citizens- build a not bad, but still limited packet of means to dam the criminal behaviour of our fellow citizens, to chase criminals, to drag them for the judge, and to lead them back straight through prison. Just like with a family budget, not everything is possible with this packet. You have to, so to say, try to make it to the end of the month; by not persuing certain crimes, by pretending theft is not that bad, by releasing criminals a bit earlier because the prisons are overcrowded, by letting young toughs go on the spot because they can not be given the right assistance, by not providing as much police monitoring in every place and so on.
I am a linguist by degree, having a MA in Chinese language and culture. This is not a translator certificate, but I have been living in China for the last 6 years as an English teacher, which has improved my Chinese, as well as my English, immensely.
I feel confident translating Dutch to English, and have been doing so on a freelance basis for the past six months.
