Romanian to English: Doina Rusti - Paturi oculte General field: Art/Literary
Translation - English Finally she can lie down with the very excitement, the very expectations that she had before each encounter. The bead creaks, he recalls her, he’s glad to touch her. He is the only one who truly knows her, who can read the spirals of her brain and understand the fine movements of the tiny creatures hidden in her capillaries. She waited 62 days to get to this moment, to run her fingers over his wood, tormenting days, the memories of which, although will be erased, will leave toxins behind. The headboard feebly staggers as a kind of greeting. It’s not too tall, barely covering her shoulder blade. Although she doesn’t fancy short boards, this one has its qualities, among them the suppleness and the way it seems to mold itself on the back. It’s just wood, a fine one, perhaps it’s not even authentic, with how many counterfeits there are nowadays, it could be synthetic wood, ennobled with immortal plastic, with polymer molecules. It could be. But it’s not, she feels it, even hears it, and if she turns her head she can see the running sand texture. In the middle of the headboard, a nearly melted sphere is dispersing in the wood. She touches it and runs her finger along it, on the implausible smoothness all the way to the end, to the snake’s eye, there her finger fits perfectly, sinks into it like into a clot. She startles, even though she knows there’s no reason to. This is just wood, carved by a hand, long since ashes and dust. And inside this eye a word sleeps, although nothing can be seen, nothing can be felt under the finger. The headboard rounds off in a soft arch, where two satraps are sleeping. Perhaps they are lions, even if they have somewhat pointed ears and judging after the infatuated pursed lips they look like bodyguards paid by the snake, spirits of the bed. Djinns. Demons.
She hardly finds the outlet behind the nightstand to plug her charger in and the Samsung’s ring of fire sparks, letting her know that the battery is drained. She gets under the blanket dressed and with her boots on. She can see through the window the bright company panels from Unirea and the Dâmbovița river is close by. Even if she can’t hear it, she feels its flow, the easy movements, the same as the ones of her blood. Tables, shelves and stools, adding the black hole leading into the lobby. As usual she hears the branches shuddering, and sees the grove. The shadows of the leaves soothe her. She will soon fall asleep, she knows it too well. Unimaginably long fingers move under the leafage, fingers that know how to uproot the shoots.
English to Romanian: Samuel Beckett - Murphy General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English THE sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new. Murphy sat out of it, as though he were free, in a mew in West Brompton. Here for what might have been six months he had eaten, drunk, slept, and put his clothes on and off, in a medium-sized cage of north-western aspect commanding an unbroken view of medium-sized cages of south-eastern aspect. Soon he would have to make other arrangements, for the mew had been condemned. Soon he would have to buckle to and start eating, drinking, sleeping, and putting his clothes on and off, in quite alien surroundings.
He sat naked in his rocking-chair of undressed teak, guaranteed not to crack, warp, shrink, corrode, or creak at night. It was his own, it never left him. The corner in which he sat was curtained off from the sun, the poor old sun in the Virgin again for the billionth time. Seven scarves held him in position. Two fastened his shins to the rockers, one his thighs to the seat, two his breast and belly to the back, one his wrists to the strut behind. Only the most local movements were possible. Sweat poured off him, tightened the thongs. The breath was not perceptible. The eyes, cold and unwavering as a gull's, stared up at an iridescence splashed over the cornice moulding, shrinking and fading. Somewhere a cuckoo-clock, having struck between twenty and thirty, became the echo of a street-cry, which now entering the mew gave Quid pro quo! Quid pro quo! directly.
Translation - Romanian Soarele strălucea, fără să aibă vreo alternativă, peste nimicul nou. Transpirația îi curgea, strângându-i curelele.
