The rock-cut temples at Abu Simbel hold a special place in the imagination of both archaeologists and travelers.
When the discovery of the Great Temple at Abu Simbel was announced to the outside world in 1813 by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt (1784–1817), only the barest tops of the colossal statues were visible (the Small Temple had already been seen from the river by this time, and had been used for centuries by nearby villagers as an animal shelter).
Soon afterward, Giovanni Battista Belzoni (1778–1823), an Italian amateur water engineer, circus strongman, and showman-turned-explorer, acting on Burckhardt’s report, cleared the way into the Great Temple (entering it on August 1, 1817) and gradually the story of Abu Simbel began to unfold.
