Although I knew early in life that I wanted to be a translator, having won a scholarship to study in Germany for one month in high school, I "accidentally" became an engineer on the way here.

During a 6-year stint as a Nuclear Electrical Technician in the military, I earned a BS in Nuclear Engineering Technology. Following my time in service, I worked as a Process Engineer in textile production and subsequently as a Manufacturing Engineer in heavy machinery manufacturing. In the latter position, I competed in an engineering quality improvement competition. I translated and delivered my presentation in Japanese and was honored to be the first American in the company to be awarded second place.

Likewise during the latter position, I earned an MA in Translation Studies from the University of Birmingham. For my dissertation, which earned a Pass with Distinction (highest category), I translated two articles about artificial  intelligence from German to English and contrasted the translation techniques.

I left the corporate world behind to launch Translations by Becca, and less than a year in, I had already witnessed countless times that translators working with subjects in which they have no professional experience deliver poor results. Frequently, their terminology is inappropriate for the context, their phrasing would never be used in the given domain, and their lack of deep understanding of the subject results in dangerous or nonsensical mistranslations.

As such, before adding medical translation to my repertoire, I returned to school to earn an AAS in Nursing. I graduated summa cum laude and valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA (maximum score). Additionally, my research paper titled Evaluation of the Impact of Nurse Specialization on Quality of Care was selected for presentation at the 2023 Tennessee Association of Science Department Chairs Research Symposium. I complete regular continuing education to maintain validity of my Registered Nurse license (#271138).

In short, over 350 hours of clinical practice and over a decade of experience as an engineer guarantee correct, industry-standard terminology and phrasing in my translations.
