Advice following steroid (cortisone) injections
Locally injected steroids can be useful in the treatment of inflamed joints and inflammation of soft tissue.
They work by potently suppressing the inflammation and shrinking the swollen tissue particularly in the short term.
They are called local because they act only in the injected area.
Injecting a joint is called an `intra-articular` injection while injection close to a joint is called `peri-articular`.
Common conditions treated include:-
Inflammation of soft tissue:
Ligaments (including plantar fasciitis)
Nerve irritation (neuritis, including neuroma /tarsal tunnel syndrome)
Soft tissue lumps and bumps (including ganglions / bursitis)
Scar pain/sensitivity
Joint Pain:
Localised joint inflammation (synovitis)
Arthritis (including osteo / rheumatoid / gout / pseudogout)
The podiatrist may include a local anaesthetic to make the injection more comfortable, but nevertheless it may still be painful at the time and may give rise to pain once the local anaesthetic has worn off up to 48 hours after the injection.
Frequency of injections:
The recommended advice is one injection at no less than six weekly intervals and no more than three injections into one area over the course a year.
Post injection advice:
It is advisable to rest the joint or affected part for two to three days after injection.
Try not to undertake any of the previous movements or activities that you know irritate the problem.
After this, a slow return to normal activity is recommended.
Improvement can last for weeks or months, and in some cases improvements last even longer.
Possible effects of steroid injections
Side effects from the low doses of steroid used are very rare.
The most common are:
Pain
Despite the use of local anaesthetic pain may be experienced at the area injected for up to 48 hours afterwards (known as a ‘steroid flare’).
It may be necessary to take pain killers such as paracetamol during this period. | Translation - Urdu

ٹیکے کو مزید آرام دہ بنانے کے لیے معالج امراضیات اس میں لوکل انستھیٹک بھی شامل کر سکتا ہے، لیکن اس کے باوجود یہ اس وقت تکلیف دہ ہوسکتا ہے اور اور ٹیکہ لگنے کے بعد 48 گھنٹوں میں لوکل انستھیٹک کا اثر ختم ہو جانے کے بعد درد میں اضافے کا باعث بن سکتا ہے۔
ٹیکوں کا تسلسل:
تجویز کردہ مشورہ یہ ہے کہ کم از کم چھہ ہفتوں تک ہر ہفتے میں ایک بار ایک ٹیکہ اور ایک سال کی مدت کے دوران ایک جگہ پر زیادہ سے زیادہ تین ٹیکے لگائے جائیں۔
