Filaggrin is an important structural protein responsible for the keratinization, moisturization, and antimicrobial peptide functions of the skin. Genetic abnormalities related to filaggrin are known to be strongly associated with atopic dermatitis. Particularly, filaggrin deficiency has been reported to cause atopic dermatitis at an early age, increase sensitivity and severity of allergies, and infection vulnerability.
