именно подумал. Мысль была точно такой же, как когда просыпаешься в первый день каникул, которых ты так ждал... Вот просыпаешься и думаешь:
"А почему мне не весело, почему я не рад, где счастье, которого я так ждал?... Наверное, я заболел!..."
Я проснулся, как будто меня включили. Я не вздрогнул, не потянулся, не издал никакого звука, я просто открыл глаза. Точнее один глаз, другой был прижат к подушке. Еще я стал слышать. И я увидел и услышал...
Увидел край подушки, ткань наволочки, близко-близко к открытому глазу. Подушка была едва освещена синеватым светом. Было рано, и была зима. Вообще-то было еще совсем темно, но в окно падал обычный городской синеватый утренний свет - смесь света белых уличных фонарей и уже зажженных желтых окон дома напротив и... моего дома. Почему-то эта смесь всегда синеватая; вечером она приятная, а утром... невыносимая. Я услышал много звуков. Это звучал город. Огромный город. Я слышал, конечно, не весь город, и это были не звуки какого-то "городского пульса" или что-то в этом роде. И это были звуки даже не просыпающегося города, город давно уже проснулся... Я слышал, как люди, живущие в моем
доме, покидают его... Они шли на работу или влекли куда-то своих детей: звуки шагов по лестницам, гудение лифта, поминутно повторяющийся стон и стук входной двери подъезда. Я слышал, как с задержкой и как бы безнадежно махнув рукой на все, заводились во дворе автомобили. А фоном всему этому, там... чуть дальше... там, звучал проспект.
Я проснулся. Я не почувствовал тела, нет. Проснулась голова. Я ощутил только голову. И в этой голове был я. У меня открылся один глаз, я стал слышать, и я не был этому рад.........
Мне так захотелось снова вернуться в сон. Не в том смысле, что я видел какой-то чудесный сон, а в том смысле, что уснуть. Так захотелось смалодушничать и позвонить всем-всем, сказать, что я заболел, наврать, и все-все отменить. Отменить ВСЁ, а главное не вставать, не зажигать яркий свет, не умываться и не бриться, не надевать носки... и все остальное, не выходить из квартиры, позвякивая ключами, не гасить перед уходом свет в прихожей, не давить на кнопку с цифрой "1" в лифте, не выходить на
улицу, не делать первый утренний холодный вдох, не садиться в твердую, холодную машину... и не ехать в аэропорт, чтобы встретить Макса. Макса, который подлетал сейчас к городу и был неотвратим. Но Макса, моего друга Макса, отменить было невозможно. И значит, нужно было делать это ВСЁ!
А Макс был сейчас совершенно некстати. Так некстати, как может быть только старинный друг, который живет далеко-далеко, которого искренне ждешь, а он приезжает или прилетает... как всегда некстати. И пару дней... вынь да положь - отдай ему. В смысле: отмени все дела, какие бы они там ни были, и приготовься много говорить, смеяться, пить, есть, и еще пить... и говорить. Спать, конечно, пару суток не получится... Но это все очень хорошо... просто некстати. Совершенно! И особенно в этот раз... Потому что я влюбился. Сильно! Очень-очень сильно. Так, как этого
со мной не было. Никогда!

Mi svegliai la mattina e pensai subito di essere malato. Non lo sentii ma, appunto, lo pensai. Il pensiero era identico a quando ti svegli il primo giorno delle agognate vacanze... Ecco, ti svegli e pensi: «Perché non sento gioia, perché non sono lieto, dov'è la felicità che avevo così atteso? … Forse sto male!...».
Mi svegliai, come se mi avessero acceso con un interruttore. Non mi scossi all'improvviso, non mi allungai, non emisi alcun suono: aprii semplicemente gli occhi. Più esattamente, aprii solo un occhio, l'altro era premuto sul cuscino. Poi iniziai a respirare. E a vedere, sentire...
Vidi l'estremità del cuscino, il tessuto della federa, vicino vicino all'occhio aperto. Il cuscino era appena illuminato da una luce bluastra. Era presto, ed era inverno. A dire il vero, era ancora completamente buio, ma alla finestra si vedeva la solita luce bluastra delle mattine di città: una combinazione della luce dei lampioni bianchi della strada con quella delle finestre gialle del palazzo di fronte e... del mio. Chissà perché, questa combinazione è sempre bluastra; di sera è gradevole, ma di mattina... è insostenibile. Sentii molti suoni. Era la città ad emetterli. L'immensa città. Certo, non sentivo tutta la città. Non si trattava nemmeno dei suoni di un suo "polso" o di qualcosa di questo genere. Non erano neanche i suoni della città che si risvegliava: la città si era risvegliata già da tempo... Sentivo come la gente che viveva nel mio palazzo lo stesse lasciando... Stava andando al lavoro o stava portando i figli da qualche parte: rumori di passi per le scale, il ronzio dell'ascensore, il lamento e il colpo secco del portone d'ingresso, che si ripetevano regolarmente. Sentivo come nello spiazzo interno le macchine si avviassero in ritardo, quasi avessero rinunciato sconsolatamente a tutto. Come sfondo generale di questo movimento, là... appena più avanti... vibrava di suoni il corso.
Mi ero svegliato. Non avevo sentito il corpo, no. Si era svegliata la testa. Avevo avvertito solo la testa. E in questa testa c'ero io. Mi si era aperto solo un occhio, avevo cominciato a percepire i suoni e non ne ero felice...
Avrei voluto così tanto risprofondare nel sonno. Non che stessi vedendo un sogno meraviglioso. Cioè, voglio dire, addormentarmi semplicemente di nuovo. Ebbi una voglia così forte di fare il vigliacco e telefonare a tutti, ma proprio a tutti, e dire che mi ero ammalato, dire bugie su bugie e annullare tutto, ma proprio tutto. Annullare TUTTO e, cosa più importante, non alzarmi, non accendere la luce a giorno, non lavarmi, non radermi, non mettermi i calzini... e tutto il resto: non uscire dall'appartamento tintinnando con le chiavi, non spegnere la luce in corridoio prima di andarmene, non spingere il pulsante con la cifra "0" in ascensore, non uscire in strada, non inspirare la prima fredda aria del mattino, non sedermi nella macchina dura, fredda... e non andare all'aeroporto a prendere Max. Max, che stava ormai atterrando e non si poteva evitare. Ma Max, il mio amico Max, non poteva essere annullato. Di conseguenza, bisognava fare TUTTE queste cose! Max era in questo momento assolutamente inopportuno. Così inopportuno, come lo può essere un amico di vecchia data, che vive lontano-lontano e che aspetti con tutto il cuore, ma che giunge o atterra... come sempre inopportuno. E due dei tuoi giorni... prendili, mettili su un piatto e donaglieli completamente. How filler words and tiny pauses keep conversations from going off the rails.
This precise clockwork dance that happens when people speak to each other is what N.J. Enfield, a professor of linguistics at the University of Sydney, calls the “conversation machine.” In his book How We Talk, he examines how conversational minutiae—filler words like “um” and “mm-hmm,” and pauses that are longer than 200 milliseconds—grease the wheels of this machine. In fact, he argues, these little “traffic signals” to some degree define human communication.
I hopped into the conversation machine with Enfield for a very meta chat about the big impacts of tiny words and pauses on human interaction.
Julie Beck: Can you explain what the “conversation machine” is and why it’s unique among animals?
N.J. Enfield: When we’re having a conversation, because of the entirely cooperative nature of language, we form a single unit. Certain social cognitions that humans have—the capacity to read other people’s intentions and the capacity to enter into true joint action—allow us to connect up to each other in interaction and ride along in this machine.
Obviously, animals communicate in a range of interesting and complex ways. But where I draw the line is the moral accountability that humans have in interaction. If one person doesn’t do the appropriate thing, for example not answering a question when it’s being asked, we can be held to account for that. We don’t see that in animals. [In humans], one individual can say: “Why did you say that?” Or “Please repeat that.” You don’t see animals calling others out for their failures, asking why did they say that, or could they repeat that. [What’s unique in humans] is the capacity for language to refer back to itself.

Inizieremo il nostro percorso a Charterhouse Place. La cappella, il museo e il negozio sono aperti alla visita.
Charterhouse venne fondato come monastero medievale nel XIV secolo e avrebbe assunto, dopo questo termine, diverse ipostasi: i Tudor lo utilizzarono come palazzo privato, in seguito fu un pensionato per bambini e, finalmente, venne tramutato in un ospizio: tale è la funzione che svolge ancora oggi.

Every day, your body uses energy for vital functions, regardless of how physically active you are.
Part of the energy is spent on physical effort, games, sports, and other motor activities.
However, most of it (65%) goes to support internal processes like blood circulation, breathing, digestion, excretion, maintaining body temperature as well as forming, renewing, and restoring and nourishing body cells and tissues.
The brain also requires a constant energy supply for reading, studying, thinking, learning languages, solving crossword puzzles, and other mental activities — even daydreaming.
At the same time, brain cells need twice as much fuel as any other cells in the body.
In order to avoid disrupting the balance, you should replenish the burned energy by eating balanced meals regularly throughout the day.
Why Shouldn’t You Skip Meals?
The body is using energy all the time: for breathing, moving, mental processes, digestion, and chemical reactions constantly occurring inside cells.
As for adolescents, extra energy is spent on body and brain growth and development.
The burned energy can be replenished with nutrients contained in food and beverages, which is why it is so important not to skip meals.
Even if you are very busy, try to follow these simple rules:
– Have breakfast every morning (if you are in a hurry, at least have an apple or a banana).
– Have lunch at school (you can take a healthy snack with you, if needed).
– Have dinner at home (homemade dishes are better and healthier than fast food or supermarket ready-to-eat meals).
A balanced energy intake is beneficial for your health, keeping you fresh and active throughout the day.
Why Shouldn’t You Give Up Fats?
Fats contain more calories than proteins and carbohydrates, which is why excessive fat intake can harm your health.
However, you shouldn’t completely eliminate fats from your diet.
Fats provide you with a huge amount of energy, help the body absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K, and also revitalize your skin and hair.
Fatty acids contained in fats should necessarily come with food, since the body is not able to synthesize them on its own.
Foods contain different kinds of fats.
Mono- and polyunsaturated ones are the most useful.
The former are prevalent in olives, peanuts, nuts, avocados, and oily fish, while the latter are found in sunflower, soybean, and sesame oils.
Saturated fats are the most harmful, not per se, but in excessive amounts.
The most dangerous of them are trans fats, so it is best that you consume them as little as possible.
Trans fats are found in high quantities in cooking oils and margarine (most often found in cookies, cakes, and pastries).
Trans fats contribute to obesity and increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases later in life.
In a healthy diet, saturated fats should make up no more than 10% of the total calorie intake, while unsaturated fats shouldn’t exceed 20%.

Per quanto riguarda gli adolescenti, una quantità ulteriore di energia viene spesa per la crescita e lo sviluppo del corpo e del cervello.
L'energia consumata può essere reintegrata con elementi nutritivi contenuti nel cibo e nei liquidi. Per questo è importante non saltare i pasti.
Anche se hai molto da fare, cerca di seguire queste semplici regole:
– Fai colazione ogni mattina (se vai di fretta, mangia almeno una mela o una banana).
– Pranza a scuola (puoi portare con te uno snack salutare, se ne hai bisogno).
