Judith Milgrom understands the need for a winter escape. Every December, the Maje founder and artistic director trades the dark Parisian winters (and the city’s monochromatic fashion sensibilities, she jokes) for Thailand’s Phuket island, a jungle paradise of white-sand beaches and dense rain forests on the Andaman Sea. (This past December was her family’s fourth annual trip to the island, which is comparable in size to the Caribbean’s Turks and Caicos.)
“It’s magic over there, and there’s a special connection that draws you back,” says the French Moroccan designer, who launched her flirty-boho brand 20 years ago, 14 years after her sister, Evelyne Chétrite, founded the Parisian line Sandro. To honor the anniversary, Milgrom & Co. are creating a celebratory coffee-table book in which Maje loyalists—photographers, designers, and videographers—pay homage to the iconic brand.
Stay
Milgrom and her family return annually to the Amanpuri luxury resort, a destination of choice for celebs like Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Located in a coconut grove on the island’s western coast, the resort boasts more than 40 multiroom private pavilions, herbal steam baths, and a pristine private beach. “It’s a mixture of ancient Thai styles and all the conveniences of modern [life],” she says, referencing her garden suite’s vaulted ceilings and intricate wood paneling.
Do
Known for its 30-plus public beaches, Phuket is also home to striking coastal rock formations and dozens of Buddhist temples, and offers an array of outdoor activities. Milgrom, a yoga and meditation aficionada, suggests visiting beachside vendors, who sell vibrant embroidered sarongs—the ideal lightweight beach getup, she says.

The designer totes fellow Parisian brands like the swimwear line Eres and the eighteenth-century trunk maker Goyard. “I’ve been carrying that luggage for years,” she says of her wheeled hard-case piece. In December, she toted a pair of sunglasses from Maje’s ’70s-inspired debut eyewear collection (available exclusively in Europe), plus her in-flight staples: Ahava’s Mineral Hand Cream, made from Dead Sea minerals, and By Terry’s Baume de Rose lip balm.
