Source text - English The type of food we eat can have a significant effect on the course of
development. This section on nutrition covers all stages of early childhood.
Food is fuel for the brain as well as the body. It drives growth, energy, cell
repair and hormonal balance. The quality, variety and timing of food intake can
have a major effect on development, health and learning. Energy from food is
more efficient when a person is moving.
It is vital that all parents think carefully about the effects of artificial
colourings, additives and excessive sugar when considering their child’s
development, learning and behaviour. Many chemicals and foods can trigger
and sustain behavioural and/or learning difficulties in children. The intake of
foods with artificial colouring and preservatives or excessive sugar should be
carefully monitored.
