Source text - Japanese しかしながら，鋳鉄ライナはシリンダブロック内での保持力や加工後の寸法精度を保つために一定以上の厚みが必要であったため，シリンダブロックとしては鋳鉄ライナの厚みを考慮したサイズとなり,”軽量化”,’コン パクト’の狙いに対して十分な効果を得ることができなかった。さらに，鋳鉄ライナの鋳包み工法は，鋳造型内にあらかじめセットされたライナの周囲にAl溶湯を流し込む工法のため，ライナとシリンダブロックの界面に生じる隙間は不可避であり.この隙間が熱伝達の障害とな ってシリンダボア内部の燃焼熱の排出を妨げ，ライナが 過熱されることで異常燃焼の要因となることから, 高出力かつ低燃費を達成するための大きな課題となっていた。
これらの課題を解決するため，従来では一般的であっ た鋳鉄ライナを廃止したシリンダブロックの開発が必要 となった。
Translation - English However, since it was necessary to have more than a certain thickness of cast iron liner in order to maintain both the dimensional accuracy after processing and the retention capacity inside the cylinder block, the size of the cylinder block came to be determined taking into consideration the thickness of the cast iron liner, and was therefore unable to get satisfactory effect with respect to weight reduction and compactness.
Moreover, since the cast iron liner is wrapped by pouring aluminium molten metal around the liner that is preset inside the casting, the occurrence of a gap in the interface of the liner and the cylinder block is inevitable, and, as this gap prevents the transmission of heat, it obstructs the emission of combustion heat from the cylinder bore, causing the liner to get overheated, which in turn becomes a cause for abnormal combustion, and has, therefore, become a major issue in achieving high output and fuel economy.
To solve these problems, it has become necessary to develop a cylinder block that does not have the cast iron liner that has generally been used so far.
