Source text - French Parmi les différentes étiologies à l’origine de transplantation hépatique, la cirrhose alcoolique représente la deuxième cause dans les pays occidentaux. La consommation chronique d’alcool est connue pour induire une immunodépression du système immunitaire, qui peut compliquer la prise en charge des traitements immunosuppresseurs après transplantation hépatique. Plusieurs études ont suggéré une réduction de l’incidence du rejet du greffon hépatique chez les patients cirrhotiques alcooliques en comparaison avec les patients transplantés hépatiques pour d’autres étiologies. En revanche, l’incidence des infections et des pathologies malignes post-greffe est plus importante chez les patients cirrhotiques alcooliques. Dans le cas des infections, l’éthanol pourrait inhiber la voie de signalisation des Toll-like récepteurs (TLR), qui est largement impliquée dans l’immunité innée responsable de la défense de l’hôte contre les microorganismes pathogènes. L’immunité innée via la voie de signalisation des TLR pourrait également jouer un rôle dans le rejet du greffon mais cette hypothèse reste encore controversée. Translation - English Alcoholic cirrhosis is the second greatest cause of liver transplantation in the Western hemisphere. Chronic alcohol consumption is known to lead to suppression of the immune response, which can cause complications in the uptake of immunosuppressant treatments following a liver transplant. Several studies have demonstrated a reduction in occurrences of rejection of the transplanted liver in patients suffering from alcoholic cirrhosis in comparison with patients requiring liver transplants for other reasons. However, the prevalence of post-transplant infection and malignant tumours is higher amongst alcoholic cirrhosis patients. In the case of infections, ethanol can obstruct the signal transduction pathways of Toll-like receptors (TLR), which are largely implicated in the innate immunity responsible for host defence against pathogens. It has been suggested that innate immunity via the TLR signal transduction pathways could also play a part in the rejection of the transplanted organ, but this hypothesis is yet to be proven. Ohashi et al. recently demonstrated the inhibition of calcineurin (CN) in the presence of ethanol in vitro. CN is a Ca2 /calmodulin-dependent protein phosphate which plays a critical role in T lymphocyte activation in the case of transplant rejection, and more specifically in the case of Cytokine Gene Transcription, such as IL-2, IFN-y and in surface receptor regulation, such as CD40L, CD95 and CD25-alpha.

Rassurez-vous… Si, dans ces quelques propos d’introduction, référence est faite à Magritte, ce n’est pas pour vous intriguer gratuitement, ni pour évoquer un improbable surréalisme qui sous-tendrait l’action de la Fondation Roi Baudouin.
Vous tenez bel et bien entre les mains le rapport qui rend compte des activités de la Fondation en 2006. Avec ses listes exhaustives de projets, de soutiens. Avec des chiffres qui traduisent l’impact de nos programmes et l’engagement de nos donateurs.
Mais ce que je veux suggérer, en détournant la formule du grand peintre, c’est que le rapport annuel d’une Fondation comme la nôtre est tout sauf un condensé froid de réalisations ou un bilan comptable. Le capital qu’il évalue est social, humain, culturel.
Ceci n’est donc pas un rapport annuel comme les autres.
Il traduit une véritable proximité, comme nous avons voulu le faire en lançant en 2006 la diffusion régulière de rapports régionaux. Celle-ci a pris son essor avec la publication des rapports consacrés aux provinces de Limbourg, du Brabant flamand, du Brabant wallon, de Namur, du Luxembourg, du Hainaut, et à la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale.
Liège avait ouvert la voie dès la fin 2005, tandis qu’Anvers, la Flandre-Occidentale et la Flandre-Orientale communiquent de plus longue date grâce au dynamisme de leurs ‘comités de soutien’. Dès cette année 2007, un éventail complet d’éditions provinciales et bruxelloise nous permettra de retourner auprès des citoyens pour les informer de ce qui s’est passé près de chez eux, tant à leur initiative qu’à la nôtre.
Au fil de trois décennies, la Fondation a en effet développé une approche locale, convaincue que c’est dans la proximité que l’engagement citoyen et la philanthropie sont particulièrement efficaces, qu’ils permettent à chacun de la rejoindre dans sa mission: oeuvrer pour une société meilleure.

Don’t worry … although some forewords might make reference to the painter Magritte, this isn’t just to grab your attention or to draw tenuous parallels between surrealism and the work of the King Baudouin Foundation.
You will have all seen the 2006 report detailing the Foundation’s activities, with its exhaustive lists of projects and sponsors, and inventories of figures showing the impact of our programmes and the involvement of our sponsors.
What I want to suggest, stepping outside the box, is that the Annual Report for a Foundation like ours should be everything but a summary of achievements or a statement of accounts. The capital evaluated here isn’t just financial; it’s social, it’s human, it’s cultural.
That is what makes our Annual Report different.
It represents a true community spirit, which is what we aimed to do in 2006, with the publication of regular regional reports. We started with reports on the Limburg, Flemish Brabant, Walloon Brabant, Namur, Luxembourg, Hainaut and Brussels Capital regions.
Liège led the way at the end of 2005, though Antwerp and East-and-West Flanders have been communicating for even longer still, thanks to their dynamic ‘support committees’. From this year onwards, a full range of regional editions will allow us to get close to the citizens and to let them know what’s happening in their area, as much at their insistence as ours.
Over three decades, the Foundation has steadily developed a local approach, convinced that community spirit makes citizen participation and charity most efficient, and that these principles will enable each one of you to join us in our mission of working towards a better society.

Translation - English Growth in the euro-area economy rebounded in the third quarter of 2007, but economic activity is expected to moderate in the coming quarters, according to the Quarterly Report on the Euro Area (QREA) published today. Tighter financing conditions, reduced confidence in the aftermath of the financial market turmoil and rising inflation, among other factors, will weigh heavily on growth in the next few quarters. Activity will, however, continue to be supported by robust employment growth and record-high profitability in the non-financial corporate sector. The report also shows that improved macroeconomic policies have been instrumental in ensuring reduced inflation volatility in the euro area, despite the recent price hikes. It goes on to analyse the evolving role of the euro since its introduction in 1999. Finally, the QREA looks at the long-term structural performance of the euro area, reviewing developments in structural reforms since the launch of the single currency and examining the causes of the sluggish productivity in recent years.
