Source text - English Ghislaine Howard is best known for her powerful evocations of shared human experience and for her acclaimed series of small paintings – daily meditations on world events. However there is another side to her work, one that is more domestic, intimate and erotic:
‘These works shown at Slick Dessin are playful meditations, day-dreams really on themes associated with Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which ever since its composition has been a never-ending influence on artists and poets. The drawings pay homage to Ovid via Picasso.
I have always loved Picasso: his virtuosity, imagination, creative energy and erotic force. But there is another Picasso: the Picasso of slumber and rest, the watcher and the watched.
These classical figures give me an excuse to play with narrative and the nude; to present a series of meetings and encounters, dramatising my own life in disguised form, partly real, partly fantastical – subverting Picasso’s overtly male perspective to one that is distinctly feminine: Picasso had the Minotaur – I prefer the centauress.
The drawings present an enclosed world, a dreamscape where erotic violence is subsumed into a dream-like atmosphere of change and flux, a single calligraphic line set within a weave of undulating blues – a gentle reference to Picasso’s famous Blue Period, but also a colour associated with the sea and sky, nostalgia, intimacy and tenderness.
I hope that these mythological conceits will delight and entrance. They were created for pleasure and to give pleasure.’

Source text - English There has been widespread and well-justified critique of the NAPLAN tests in Australian schools. Concerns have focused on the ways the testing severely narrows the school curriculum, compounds disadvantage and creates undue anxieties for young students. Current panic about this year’s writing test is telling of the broader social and political consequences of a back-to-basics curriculum underpinned by a high-stakes standardised testing system.
The poorly worded question set for the writing test, “which law or rule would you make better in your view?”, has been criticised for being too difficult for students. Teachers felt they had been ambushed by the complexity of the question when they had been preparing students on the technical aspects of writing a narrative or persuasive text. The outcome was that some students did not attempt the question and received zero marks for writing.
One particular response to this year’s writing question compels reflection about the purpose and future of our schooling system. To ask such a question has been seen as “inappropriate” and “ludicrous”, especially for “children being brought up in law-abiding families, where they are told that rules are important”.
Arguably, it should be the driving purpose of education to ask such questions, albeit not within the constraints of a standardised test. As the Melbourne Declaration sets out, a key goal for Australian schooling is to produce “active and informed citizens”. Denying the possibility of critical thinking – for example, examining issues of justice in rules and laws – threatens these broader goals of active citizenship and engaged democratic participation.
The end of critical thinking?
The content of the NAPLAN writing tests has always been secondary to the technical aspects of writing that students are expected to bring to the task. This is a function of the fact that the same question is posed to all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. This year, however, the question demanded both control over the genre as well as critical thinking.
Debates about “which law or rule would you make better in your view?” – and the critical engagement it requires – would be sadly unfamiliar to many Australian students who were being prepared for a test of their technical writing.
When schooling is focused so heavily on preparing for high-stakes tests, it is not surprising that teachers have to resort to “defensive pedagogies” – teaching strategies that ensure good examination results. This is made worse by relentless preoccupations with “teacher effectiveness”, where performance is measured by student outcomes. Teachers do more than teach to the test, but the scope for this is diminished under high-stakes scrutiny.
Many students, especially from minority groups and disadvantaged communities, would be ready and motivated to discuss this year’s writing question. After all, it is a question that invites reflection on matters of fairness. However, this important opportunity is lost when it is framed within a high-pressure test that forces defensive pedagogies.

La panique actuelle liée aux résultats du test d’alphabétisation est révélatrice des conséquences sociales et politiques élargies d’un programme de retour aux sources étayé par un système d’examen standardisé à enjeu élevé.
La question mal formulée choisie pour le test d’écriture, « quelle règle ou loi pourriez-vous, à votre opinion, améliorer ? »a été critiquée comme étant trop difficile pour les élèves. Les professeurs se sont sentis piégés par la complexité de la question alors qu’ils avaient préparé leurs élèves aux aspects techniques de la rédaction d’un texte argumentatif ou narratif. En conséquence, certains élèves n’ont pas essaye de répondre a la question et n’ont reçu aucun point pour l’écriture.
Une réponse en particulier à la question d’écriture force la réflexion quand au but et à l’avenir de notre système d’éducation. Poser une telle question a été perçu comme « inapproprié » et « ridicule », principalement pour « des enfants élevés dans des familles respectueuses de la loi, a qui on a inculque que les règles étaient importantes.
Sans doute, la force motrice derrière une éducation est de poser de telles questions, bien que ceci devrait être fait hors des contraintes d’un test standardise. Comme le précise la déclaration de Melbourne, l’un des buts du système éducatif australien est de produire « des citoyens actifs et informés ». Le refus de la possibilité d’une pensée critique (en examinant, par exemple, des questions de justice au cour des lois et des règles) menace ces buts plus larges de citoyenneté active et de participation engagée dans le processus démocratique.
Vers une fin de la pensée critique?
Le contenu des tests d’écriture NAPLAN a toujours été secondaire aux aspects techniques de l’écriture que les élèves sont tenus de fournir dans leur travail. Ceci est lié au fait que la même question est posée aux élèves en années 3, 5, 7 et 9. Cette année, cependant, la question requerrait à la fois une maitrise technique et une pensée critique.

Apres tout, il s’agit d‘une question qui invite a la réflexion sur des questions d’équité. Cependant, cette opportunité importante est perdue lorsqu’elle est formulée au sein d’un test a haut enjeu qui contraint à utiliser des strategies defensives.
