English term
fortitude
English to Hebrew

I would like to know what hebrew word would be the best translation of the english word "fortitude".
Ideally I would like to find a hebrew name (masculine and feminine) that means "fortitude" or "he (or she) who has fortitude".
"Fortitude" (see the definition below)means more than "courage" that would give the hebrew names Amats or Amtsah (right ?)
Here is the dיfinition of "Fortitude":
FOR'TITUDE, n. [L. fortitudo, from fortis, strong.]
That strength or firmness of mind or soul which enables a person to encounter danger with coolness and courage, or to bear pain or adversity without murmuring, depression or despondency. Fortitude is the basis or source of genuine courage or intrepidity in danger, of patience in suffering, of forbearance under injuries, and of magnanimity in all conditions of life. We sometimes confound the effect with the cause, and use fortitude as synonymous with courage or patience; but courage is an active virtue or vice, and patience is the effect of fortitude.
Fortitude is the guard and support of the other virtues.

Oz, Eitan, Amatzyah// Amitza and more
While Oz, mentioned above, captures bravery rather well, it does not particularly score high on the spiritual side of the meaning of fortitude. Pretty name, though.
Eitan, as in "he who has fortitude" is another masculine name and can mean strong, brave and strong-hearted, as well as "there to stay". For example, Nachal Eitan is a river always flowing (does not depend on seasonal changes).
Amatzyah, mentioned above, possibly captures the spirit of the word fortitude best, but is also associated with God and is most commonly used in religious circles. Nothing wrong with that, but it may sound a little strange to some.
For a girl the closest I can get is Azit. However, the name is often associated with female dogs... If it were my daughter I would consider Amitza, which- while I have never heard used, has a nice ring.
In that sense, you could pioneer a new name for a boy, too, such as Amitz or Ometz (they probably sound close enough to common names like Amit and Omer).
If you need the Hebrew spelling to any of these, feel free to contact me directly.

Ometz, אומץ
The name that springs to mind is Amatzya, who was a king of Judah (literally, "God's fortitude"). An alternative would be "Oz" - with a long O as in boat- which can also be used as a name. As for a feminine name, I'll have to get back to you.

: While Ometz means "bravery" Oz is a good Hebrew name. The asker isn't just looking for the translation of the word but also for a suggestion for a name.

Kor-ruach - קור-רוח
Literally, "coolness of spirit." Its meaning matches that of fortitude in just about every connotation.
"Ometz" means "courage."

Dictionary might translate \"fortitude\" as \"ometz\" but it also translates \"bravery\" as \"ometz\" and \"courage\" as \"ometz-lev.\" \"Kor-ruach\" seems to me to capture the essence of the word better.
If you\'re looking for a name I\'d go with \"Oz\".

Oz Ruach
As an alternative to *Qor Ruach*, I think Oz (with 'aiyn)Ruach also preserves the subtleties of fortitude. It means literally "strength of spirit".
For the Heb name I I have listed several suggestions:
1. 'Oz
2. 'Az (brave but also of intense coloring or taste
3. 'Ezuz (this is a modern name meaning stength, courage, bravery)
4. Amatsiya
5. Amatsi (possible female name).

: Ezuz? For a modern day Hebrew name? How many Ezuz's do you know? Oz, Az, Amatzya (not Amatsiya)- sure. All are good Hebrew (Israeli) names.

you may be right Ashi, I was quoting from a book named *Shem Cham* by Dany Kerman (who may not be the greatest linguist but is on the other hand an exceptionally funny guy). It's a book about names, their origins and meaning etc.

Tal Ganani (X)
: Oz-ruach? Haven't really heard this term used -- ever. Kor-ruach is a commonly used term, in military descriptions of heroism for example.

amitz or amitzur or oz or eyal
AZmitz ar Amitzur are old fashioned boys names. Oz is a nice modern name for a boy, while Eyal is very good for both boys and girls. All of them have the connotation of courage, strength abd reliability

I would be interested to also find a name that would have the meaning "never give up" or "he (she) who never gives up". Which is one result of having fortitude.

Discussion
I like especially what Tal Kinnersly wrote about "Eitan". Is there not a feminin form for it, like "Eitanah" or something ?
Does Amitzah mean the same as Amtsah ?
