Hi Robert,
It happens all the time,
You buy something, the next week there is a sale...
Or you decide not to buy, the next day you pass the store and they offer 50% discount...

Compared to itself since 2007? Based on its wonderful user customer support, which would not be necessary in the first place if it had provided a good user manual, or any user manual, for that matter?
Yea. Trados is indeed the best version since 2007 and has wonderful user support without manuals, by googling error messages and hoping smn already had that problem and solved it.
I am not impressed.

Or at least here on Proz. Everybody got his/her own taste, me too.
I never said Studio is perfect, but it works perfect for me, better then a whole bunch of other CAT tools I have been "forced" to use. Maybe except for MemoQ, they all look to me as offshoots from the original product (=Trados). One got a littlebit more of this, and the other a littlebit more of that, but all are slower!

Still got mixed feelings about their pricing strategy (see my threads on this forum), but apparently not mixed enough. I upgraded today to 2015. Just as Meyers said in his thread: 'Sometimes lucky, sometimes not'.
No, I don't work for SDL (just in case you were wondering), and I don't get paid either to make a positive entry about the product, but I don't understand all the nagging about flows in the system. You get one of the most advanced products available on the translation market at the moment. Something might go wrong, or better said, something always goes wrong. I guess that is the price you pay for pushing up technology to new levels. Remember how you learned walking? ▲ Collapse | | | 564354352 (X) Denmark Local time: 12:51 Danish to English + ... Well, I for one am a happy Studio user, having used Trados from about version 2, I think, back in 2000 and up through the different versions, now on Studio 2014. In my experience, SDL ARE improving the product continually, and I wouldn't want to miss out on any improvements. Hence, I just snatched up the early bird offer, as I know I will want to upgrade anyway as soon as Studio 2015 becomes available.

I would sing at least one verse for SDL when they provided a tool which makes it possible to receive / open and create / send the packages only, i.e. with a limited ability to process the files (sdlxliff, TM), so that I have access to the sdlxliff files with whatever CAT tool I want. Wouldn´t that be a real "open platform" approach? I would even pay for such a tool!

... you want SDL to provide a standalone tool that would allow you to do anything other than work with our tools. What sort of business model is that? Would you provide your translation memories and termbases to your clients so they can use them to give the work to someone else? Sounds the same thing to me.
Notwithstanding that the packages are zip files. You can open them and extract the files you need.
Notwithstanding that we also provide a platform under hood, completely free of charge, that allows developers to create their own tools and plugins, maybe even to do do the sort of thing you want. There isn't another commercial vendor in the industry that is as open, or as capable, as we are in this regard.

Yes, I refuse to work with your tools, frankly spoken, like a growing number of agencies / end clients and freelancers does i.e. by switching over to memoQ or Deja Vu.
What sort of business model is that? Would you provide your translation memories and termbases to your clients so they can use them to give the work to someone else?
That is exactly one of the aspects of the "business model" SDL and other CAT vendors enforce in general with CAT tools:
Creating databases by specialized translators with bilingual files / TMs and employing cheaper linguists for follow-up jobs, profiting from the entries in the databases made by specialists.
Notwithstanding that the packages are zip files. You can open them and extract the files you need.
Yes, I know, with WinRar. But therefore you need a very good relationship to your client so that they accept the sdlxliff files back only and not as a packet. But mostly they only accept the return packets, that´s why I ask for offering such a merely "interfacing tool".
Wouldn´t this be an opportunity for SDL to proof that they do not just rely on a virtually monopolistic structure but on the qualities of their tools?

...and you know I can expect that regarding the fact how much money I (we all!) have spent to SDL since I met the "industry" in 2008, starting with Trados 2007.
Do you know why I have left the SDL path of sucess? Did you ever try the industry leading dynamic on-the-fly AutoWrite feature of Deja Vu? What else than a static "AutoSuggest" has SDL to offer?
Nevertheless, I have to admit that at least YOU are very much dedicated to the troubles proz members here report and I am sure everybody appreciates that. I wish the programmers of SDL had the same level of commitment as you, Paul.

Watch out for Kilgray

Thanks, good answer, so you are not going to offer such a tool, although I did not expect this tone from you. Sorry for my direct German voice in return
It was nice to e-meet you, Paul

Matthias, you're posting in the wrong thread.
If you want to open Studio packages in another CAT tool, then post a request in the forum on that tool. Or contact the developers directly.
Some tools already do this, as you know. | | | Thanks, Emma, ... | May 3, 2015 |

Hi
Just a note - which I am not sure I noticed explained from us ...
Everyone who has purchased (either a new SDL Trados Studio 2014 license or upgraded to Studio 2014) since 1st April will get a free automatic upgrade to Studio 2015.
We officially announced the pre-launch on 16th April - but the upgrade will apply from 1st April.
Hope this clarifies further.
Kind regards

Hi. I would like to start by saying that I think Paul is wonderful, however much I may rant about SDL/Trados at times (and I do...).

At the time I purchased, there was no concept of Plus - although in theory that is what I actually have, since I have 2 activations. There was also no concept of Ultimate - and my separate purchase of Auto Suggest does not seem to be taken into account by any of the upgrade paths offered, since Ultimate includes Auto Suggest plus MultiTerm Extract, which I do not currently feel I need.
As far as I can tell, had I not been an enthusiastic purchaser, I would have saved money on the upgrade to 2014 (there have been some much better offers from you since I bought the upgrade at 'special' reduced price); and had I waited until now, I would also get 2015 FREE. And if I want to get like to like, I am obliged to purchase an upgrade to Plus (which surely is what I should have) as well as an upgrade to 2015. 305 euros. AND I will have to purchase an upgraded version of Auto Suggest, if such a thing even exists as a separate option.
All round, as far as I can see, in order to upgrade to like product it would cost me about 400 euros as a big thank you for being a repeat customer and early adopter.
Instead of being FREE.
Come on guys, what is going ON!?!
Or maybe I have just misunderstood. Eh. Giving you a little chance to redeem yourselves, whilst meanwhile talking to a nice chap called Dan at Fluency, and improving my MemoQ skills.
Thank you. ▲ Collapse | | | A PSMA is a bargain | May 18, 2015 |
In response to Sian, I have a PSMA - Premium Support and Maintenance Agreement.
It means that when the upgrade is announced, I can go and download it at a suitable moment between jobs, whenever it fits in.
I am not clear about AutoSuggest - I had it from the start, probably on some offer, as I am also a relatively early adopter.

I remember going to a workshop about Studio 2009, very hesitant and full of the old jitters about Trados updates. But clients were updating and there was no escaping the new 'monster'!
I was completely converted, and used Studio next day to handle a 70-file job that would have been a nightmare with Workbench, then converted all my TMs and started playing with AutoSuggest.
But as far as I know, it has always been there on my system.
I have had my ups and downs with Studio, new computers, the odd bug, client files that gave it hiccups... My tendency to merge and split segments was a bit much for 2009, and it would seize up just before deadline and refuse to export a target, but the almost instant help saved me on several occasions.
Including the time when the solution was to save the whole job, update to Studio 2011 and open it as a 2011 project... which worked like a charm.
I converted to Studio 2014 because I was having trouble with some PDFs (with Studio 2011). A colleague on the same project told me Studio 2014 could cope with them, and I was very grateful, because the content was full of repetitions, and it was a pain doing them without a CAT!
If I can't find advice fast in the Knowledge Centre or get the client to send a trouble-free file (which one of them sometimes can - they have a Studio-wizard in their DTP department) - then I send a request to SDL and they fix it.
I think the PSMA is worth every cent for the helpline, and it is certainly not much more expensive than chasing special offers. ▲ Collapse | | | SDL_Steve United Kingdom Local time: 11:51 English to Arabic Totally confused by upgrade/pricing path | May 18, 2015 |
Hi Sian,
After checking your account, I can see that you purchased the upgrade to Studio 2014 back in October 2013 and then Autosuggest in March last year.
As you already have the PLUS version and Autosuggest- ALL subsequent upgrades will retain both PLUS and Autosuggest.
The total cost for your Studio 2015 would therefore ONLY be 145.00€ and can be purchased from the following pre-launch upgrade offer
