Dragon 9: Command Mode in Normal Mode??

Sorry if I didn't post a good headline, but this is hard to explain. I've been using Dragon Naturally Speaking for more than a year, and just this past month, I've translated around 100 pages using it. No problem.

This afternoon, I come back from running errands, and I reboot everything, without changing any settings.

However, now, when I speak a sentence, it appears on the screen, but while I'm dictating, the menu bar goes active and changes start being made to my do

Sorry if I didn't post a good headline, but this is hard to explain. I've been using Dragon Naturally Speaking for more than a year, and just this past month, I've translated around 100 pages using it. No problem.

This afternoon, I come back from running errands, and I reboot everything, without changing any settings.

However, now, when I speak a sentence, it appears on the screen, but while I'm dictating, the menu bar goes active and changes start being made to my document.

For example, I'm in "Reading" view, and it switches me to normal. Formatting menus drop down and get in the way of what I'm reading. Paragraph settings change, and fonts go from regular to bold.

I fiddled with the headset without result. I tried changing from "Normal" to "Dictation Mode" and then I shut down everything and started over, and this is still happening.

I hope somebody might be able to give me an idea of what has gone wrong and how to fix it.

After rebooting another time, everything seems to be back to normal. Sorry to have posted this!

Are you using Windows Vista?
Anyway, if you 've benn using DNS please save the text file of your dictionary so you can preserve all those words used to feed DNS.

Hi, Yaotl!

In March-April, I wasn't tracking because I was juggling other projects, but today I did over 20 pages.

HOWEVER, I haven't proofread, edited, or polished...and I still have to translate the notes (76 of them!)

All the same, I'm impressed at how fast things go with this tool.

I'm using XP not Vista.

I did not know there was a text file of the dictionary! I'll look into that. THANK YOU!!!

Yaotl, could you please explain what you meant with the text files and the dictionary? I am new to DNS and haven´t come across that feature yet. Thanks.

I hope Yaotl returns, but in the meantime, I went to the "Words" tab in the menu, and there, I was able to export my custom dictionary. It contains a lot more than just words that I've "trained" (e-mail address names from my addressbook, for example).

If I understand what he's suggesting, should I need to reinstall DNS, rather than retraining everything, I'd simply import the text file.

But I'm not sure that's true. It is just a notepad file,

Reinstalling on a new computer Apr 23, 2008

I've just invested in a new laptop to work alongside my main computer and my IT adviser (my 19 year-old son!) exported the User files, so that I won't have to retrain Dragon on the new computer. I must admit I haven't had cause to try it yet, but it appears to be all there, so I don't see why it shouldn't work. I suppose it would be a good idea to have a back-up anyway.

You betcha! What a horror it would be if the hours I've spent training DNS had to be repeated.

We have found that user file corruption happens far more often when user files are stored on a typical hard drive. We store our user files on a thumb drive (no moving parts) to help prevent this problem and allow us to use the same user profile on multiple computers without necessitating the need to copy our user files. We additionally recommend scheduling one day out of every month, in your favorite calendar program, to physically make a backup copy of your entire user profile. As you probably already know all too well, there is a tremendous amount of work in your user profile and saving yourself 2 minutes a month by not making a backup copy is too much of a risk. Not making a backup copy of your user profile is equivalent to riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
