The feature is random, and can be made non-random Jun 23, 2009

Hello all,

The Featured Pro section on the home page is completely random. It is set to rotate every 15 minutes from among member profiles with a profile picture. It does not base who will be featured next on who was previously featured-- this may lead to some being featured more frequently during a given time period than others, and maybe not at all during another time period.

Erik, I'm not sure how viable it would be to implement the system of time or zone for being featured. I can imagine this would create "bottlenecks" for some time periods and possibly open stretches in others, or resulting in just as many if not more translators not being featured often, while others are featured frequently-- with the added complication that those who may be looking for more global exposure will not get it, through this feature anyway (no matter what the hour of the day, it's still the site's home page). I believe this echoes in part the response of another staff member on this, made in http://www.proz.com/post/204830#204830

If the issue is "fairness", the system can be changed to keep track of who has been featured previously and not allow them to be featured until everyone else has already had their 15 minutes (counting new members who may be added along the way).

Best regards,

Jared

As far as I am concerned, yes, the issue is "fairness". As thoroughly commented, I have noticed profiles appearing 3 times on a row in one week, and I certainly do not consider this "fair" if both the person being featured more (because of their lucky number in this random featuring lottery) and myself are paying the same amount of money for membership and, therefore, for profile exposure.

I think the system should be improved (and I am a bit disappointed because, unless I have not understood you correctly, you make it sound, Jared, as it is not feasable), but I definitely agree that, as suggested, the system should at least block anyone who may have already been featured more than the corresponding number of times per year in relation to other profiles that may not have been equally featured.

Of course this may not seem like such an important feature, but I insist, on the one hand its improvement was requested years ago (I now see that as early as 2005) and, on the other hand, Proz.com should be consistent and offer a better/fair service in regard to this "featuring" tool if they advertise it as a plus in terms of platinum membership marketing for all paying members, otherwise change the wording about this feature.

Thanks and good evening,

Ivette

Fair enough Jun 23, 2009

Hi Ivette,

Sounds fair enough. I am asking site developers to implement this. The wording of the feature will also most likely be changed, or removed from the benefits page altogether.

Best regards,

Jared

How to be featured? Jun 6, 2010

Good afternoon/evening/morning to All,

I'm digging this topic out to come back to the issue of fairness/randomness (whatever we choose to call it).
As Ivette wrote, one of the reasons of paying for the Platinum membership is the advantage of "having your moment" at the main ProZ page.
I've been a full paying ProZ member since autumn 2006 continually and have always has a photo in my profile. However, the last time ProZ.com featured me was in... November 2007. I cannot fi

Of course, I wish all the best to ProZ and would like to believe in such a huge number of members, but still, within those over 2.5 years I could see some people appearing and reappearing as featured translators and I seemed to have been forgotten by the system.

Have I missed something? Any idea how to be featured in my case? Thank you in advance for your help or advice.

Regards,
Marcelina.

Featured or not featured, does it really matter?

I have been featured myself 4 times in a row within a month about two years ago or maybe more and never again since then.

Sure, I find it is nice to be featured, but if I am not, I don't bother. By the way, I believe this feature is really random and there aren't any manipulations behind.

A local fellow translator (with an entirely different language combo) had once seen me “featured”, read my profile, offered me his hardly used kayak, and we’ve been paddling buddies ever since. Random, eh?

I had to go check out your profile.... Don't tell me you wove that tapestry on your Personal page. It is gorgeous!!
