Jobs disappearing from list Thread poster: Francesca Bernardis

Hello all. This is the first time I use the forums, and I do hope I'm posting in the right section.
Have you ever noticed how the jobs listed on the homepage may be there at one time and disappear when you come back to the site a few hours later? (And I don't mean that they are replaced by newer ones and disappear out of the bottom, they disappear from the middle of the list.)
My question is why.

My question is why.
I quoted on a job today, via email. Later I received a mass-mail from them sounding very much like data-reaping or some kind of scam. I came back to Proz to alert everyone, but the job was not listed anymore. I still had the job code, so I could see the listing page, and there I found a notice saying: "This job has been made temporarily invisible by site staff for the purpose of checking job information. "
Which is great. Someone alerted Proz before I could, or Proz staff discovered something wrong with the listing, in both cases it's Proz working for our good, and I thank the staff for that.
Still, I believe it would be more transparent, and more easier for us to protect ourselves, if the job listing were left at its place, flagged in some way and not accepting quotes (kind of like a closed job, where you cannot see the outsourcer's details), but still visible.
Of course there may be a reason why the system works as it does, but I'd like to know why. ▲ Collapse | | | jacana54 (X) Uruguay English to Spanish + ... Dear Jared and Lucía | Jul 25, 2012 |
I am most surprised to see that no-one has posted any replies to this topic.
As site staff as well as moderators of this forum, I would ask you to please give Francesca, who is using these forums for the first time, some answers to her concerns.
I have seen a couple of jobs disappearing too and I would like to know a bit more.
Thanks in advance! | | | Jobs under investigation remain invisible to prevent confusion | Jul 25, 2012 |
Hello Francesca, hello Lucia,
My apologies for the delay in my reply.
Note that, as Francesca noticed, and as the message she quotes says, job postings may be temporarily made invisible while site staff checks job information to make sure that the offer is legit and that it is in line with site rules. Currently, the system does not allow to hide the job poster's contact information while the job is being checked unless the job is actually published and later closed. If ... If the information in the job posting cannot be confirmed by site staff, the job is later removed.
Have in mind that, if a specific job offer is not legit or in line with rules (or is being investigated), there is no point in having it visible as other job offers -closed and open ones. This is so basically to prevent confusion.
Hope this explains.
Kind regards,
Lucia ▲ Collapse | | | jacana54 (X) Uruguay English to Spanish + ... Thank you Lucía | Jul 25, 2012 |
¡Gracias, tocaya!
So this basically means that one may be responding to a job offer before it has been cleared as legitimate.
I hadn't realized, it isn't very good news | |

Not necessarily. As explained at http://www.proz.com/faq/3265#3265 , jobs posted by non-logged-in visitors and free site users are checked by site staff before being made publicly visible. Jobs posted by members are made publicly visible instantly, but they may be hidden temporarily with the purpose of checking job information if needed. If there is evidence to suspect fraud, site staff may let quoters know via private message (provided the contact form selected by the poster is "online quote").
In any case, as explained at http://www.proz.com/faq/137947#137947 , each translator interested in working with a given outsourcer is encouraged to investigate potential clients to the fullest extent possible before deciding whether or not to work for them, regardless of the channel through which the job is being offered.

Thank you Lucia Colombino for your concern, and thank you Lucia Leszinsky for your replies. And my compliments to the ProZ site and staff for what mostly seems a good system.

In posting this discussion I was more curious about how the site worked than worried about this specific case.

This is great news. My only reservation remaining that, in my experience, most jobs posted ask for direct email contact rather than online quotes. (Admittedly, my experience with quotes on ProZ is limited, and you may have stats for the site as a whole that prove me wrong, but that's my impression.) I wonder if there could not be a way to let quoters know in both cases. Like a notice on the site. Or a repository for jobs canceled because of suspected fraud. Just wondering.
Thank you for your help and keep up the good work! ▲ Collapse | | | Translator scam alert center | Aug 2, 2012 |

Notices informing members of scammers or even banned outsourcers are posted to Blue Board records. Also, make sure you subscribe to the Translator scam alert center, http://www.proz.com/about/translator-scam-alerts/ , to be notified of any new form of scam (regardless of the job posting method used).
