I loved the recent "Green translation" thread!
This video is a bit lenghty, 15-20 min., I think, but it is well worth your time if you are of the green kind...

These corporations and industries have real power, it's not just a liberal story. So they push their mutant antibiotic-infested products on us. They want to be more efficient so the food they produce is cost-effective but unhealthy for us (and great for the pharmaceutical industry also--but that's another story).
I try to buy organic as much as I can, but it's too expensive. Processed foods are much cheaper than their organic or healthier counterparts. Just a couple of hours ago I had to choose between a bag of generic-brand spinach ($1.84) and a SMALLER bag of organic spinach ($3.24). I bought the generic brand But it's not about being hip, it's about being healthy. Years ago I used to work in an office with around 100+ people. And half the people used to eat fast-food every day, and half the people were in the Atkins diet, eating bacon and ridiculous large steaks every day (poor arteries), or in any other diet. Only two people were vegetarian. But I can understand people that eat fast food every day. It's cheap, it's very cheap. The most unhealthy foods out there are the cheapest. I used to live in Peru, a third-world country where eating fruits and vegetables everyday is not a big deal, at least in middle-class families. Now I live in the US and I can't afford to eat fruit every day, not like I used to anyway. I wish the government would do something about it but it wouldn't be cost-effective, so they won't.

Thank you, but no thank you, I've already had the misfortune of living in a country like this, and I really don't want to go back. Instead, I just don't eat junk, that's all. It works.

Did you read something about the recent FAO meeting in Rome? Just the same. Rich countries don't want to hange their subsisdies and its fast style of life, so, do not expect any kind of change from them.
Unfortunately, things in Latin America are not better as our governments try to apply similar patterns. Yes, we can eat fresh fruits and vegetables ...still..... but how about the current world provoked crisis regardind food prices??

Now, my stile:
1) I try to avoid fast-food. I've visited BurgerKing twice this year while a friend of mine eats there twice a day!
2) I like natural juice and not artificial favors.
3) I like natural sugar, not Splenda.
4) I use to eat vegetables with chili and lemon avoiding oily garnishes.
5) I eat Mexican natural corn-made tortillas, not the corn used by the USA farmers to feed their beasts. (a part of NAFTA consists of buying them their corn rather than cultivating ours)
6) I eat Venezuelan and Mexican chocolates while boycotting Sneakers, Milkiways, Toblerones et al. This is so funny. Europeans and yankees come to our countries, buy our cacao, process it and then, they sell us chocolate! Well, not with my money. We don't need them as we have better chocolates here.
Maybe we can set a factory in Oaxaca to export whiskey....to Scotland.
7) I don't drink tequila anymore as USA firms have bought that centennial industry decreasing its quality and overexploiting the land where agave is cultivated.
8) I don't eat Bimbo's bread because of its low-quality standards. I eat organic bread.
9) We (relatives and me) cultivate lettuce 3 sq. m., beetroot 3 sq. m. and fruit trees like apples (1), peaches (3), pears (2), figs (3). We eat fresh fruit all the year and we used to eat more when my father was younger.
10) I dislike to compel kids to eat their food so I frezze it and thaw it when they're hunger.
and very very important
11) I do not vote those individuals/parties who/which support socially irresponsible firms.

- di you see the video? You do have a point, it's no good using the government as a scapegoat - personally I am mainly interested in myslef and the planet being healthy.
It has nothing to do with translation - I just thought it was a good video. I thought I had posted it in the OT forum (that was my intention) but a moderator moved it here, thanks.

1. Well, guess what - you're not the only one who's had that misfortune.
2. "I just don't eat junk" - I am afraid you do - and you either don't know it, or you ignore it. There is no way, in today's world, you can avoid eating (or ingesting) junk, unless you live on a farm and grow your own. But then you're probably subsisting on a near-starvation level.
And seriously - there is no way, really no way you can avoid eating junk. And I am not talking about Twinkies, Coca-Cola, chips (i.e. crisps), corn syrup, aspartam, sodium benzoate etc. etc.
The vegetables and fruits are sprinkled, everything is grown on artificial fertilizer, the meat is stuffed with antibiotics and you are breathing in all kinds of junk emanating from your furniture and appliances, you're continuously fried by cellular microwaves and all kinds of other E/M radiation.
We can't get away from all this. We just can't.

I agree. Whatever we eat, we'll snuff it in the end.
Does anyone remember that Woody Allen film (can't remember its name) in which Woody is awakened from a coma hundreds of years in the future. He asks the doctor "Where are all my friends?" "I'm afraid they've ... passed away, sir" replies the doctor. "But ... but ... they ate organic rice" stutters Woody.

No, really, I liked the talk, but I'm afraid I hear that stuff all the time but still find it hard to change things around (esp. with 3 kids who think the colour green is their worst enemy).

I know it's hard to make kids eat green - I've got a 3 year old and a 1 year old. A nurse recommended that you simply put the "new" food on the table along with all the other well-known food, eat some yourself, but don't comment on it. Keep doing that every day, and eventually they will try some. Be the example. After all, kids, don't do as we say, they do as we do ...
