Death always takes you by surprise. I was shocked to hear that such an active and decent man is no longer alive. His messages still live in my mailbox and David will always live in our heart.

You left a big hole in many of our hearts, even those of us translators who only knew you from your words in the many forums and communities we convene. Thank you for your contributions, your helpfulness and magnanimity and above all for the easy humour with which you dispensed them. You were a daily virtual presence in many of our lives and will be sorely missed.
My deepest condolence to David\'s wife and daughter.

Dear Family,
I really do not know Mr. Orpin, but he is a fellow human being and we are truly grieving at his loss. My God be with you at such difficult times. No words can express what a man feels towards the loss of a loved one, but at least you can count us amoung those who share your sorrows. Please have patience and keep the faith and God will help you overcome those difficult times.

That\'s true that my header \"David Orpin is dead\" was inappropriate, my sole excuse is that in France, we are used to call a cat a cat, and a dead (person)a dead(person), as we say. But the heading you decided to use reflects more than mine the respect David and his wife and daughther deserve. Please note that the idea of the hour of celebration, i.e. noon GMT, has been unconsciously inspired by David himself. For me, he has always been the \"SunMan\", illuminating my difficult days, even recently when I had to bear some undue attacks. So, I couldn\'t imagine a better moment in the day to celebrate him, to show him our respect.

I am very shocked. I didn\'t know David at all, but I\'m shocked to see how
fast things go.
On December 15th, he wishes us a happy Christmas and a peaceful 2003. One
day later he dies.
That just doesn\'t make sense.
My deepest sympathies.

I, as many others in this community, have not had the privilege of knowing David personally. But it does not matter. I always feel that(our) world is poorer, emptier, when someone like him goes away so prematurely. It is just not right! The only comforting thought, if there can be one, is that maybe God has a special plan for him...
It must be so hard for those left behind, though. My heartfelt condolences go to his wife, daughter, and all those who were really close to him. | | | Ralf Lemster Germany Local time: 00:17 English to German + ... Very, very sad | Dec 19, 2002 |
Although I never met David in person, I caught at least a glimpse of his strong personality by reading his contributions on various lists. Sad to see such a character being torn out of life so suddenly.
My feelings go out to his family and close friends.

I was really shocked when I read \'David Orpin has passed away\' on Proz yesterday.
Last Monday 16th December he sent me a message in reply to a previous message I had wrote to him offering the agency my translation and proofreading services. He said that he would keep my CV on file even though they didn\'t work that much with my language combination.
